Hi folks i just bought a 1998 freelander everything seems to be working fine but i have noticed a very damp patch under the flap in the boot and closer inspection tells me there may also have been water getting into the drivers side footwell as it is not damp but stained. Also can anyone tell me if there is a timing belt or chain on this model ?
Many Thanks:)

Hi and welcome!

I've got the '99 2.0tdi and it's got a timing belt, yours should be the same.
And as busterbus said, it's condensation or a leaky door seal, if you do a search you'll see there is quite a few threads regarding this. ;)

Depends what engine it is, if it is the L series it will have a belt and if it is the TD4 it has a chain

Yep, 1998 = L-series = belt

The damp in the boot will probably be condensation that needs airing, but do a search on "cubby box" for more extreme examples of the problem!

The footwell might be the heather matrix or a dodgy door seal. You'll have to do a bit of investigation - I tracked a leak down to the seal along the bottom of the windscreen.

Cheers
