Howdy dudies.

2004 Disco2 (Manual). Desperately trying to improve fuel economy. Just wondered if anyone has any tips for next steps.

I have had a manual before which did 30+ on a run, and a friend's got quite a bit better than that (after some mods).

After doing a lot of work, the best I can get is 27.7mpg. That's at 70mph on cruise with no weight in the car except my lean ass. She's had a good service, filters etc. She's been recently decatted (with a pipe), engine timed up (was slightly out), tyres all bang on book pressures etc etc. On local roads (not good for fuel economy, hilly and bendy) I get 24mpg.

Anyone think I could/should be able to get more? If so, what steps are next? (Intercooler maybe? Can't afford it, but might start saving.)

Something wrong there, my 3.5 RR did 16mpg every where, 3.9 disco 18mpg average and could be 22mpg on a long run , if on motorways… then its back to 18.

A 4.2 Maserati I had for 3years did 32mpg once at 60mph according to the dash display but could drop to 8mpg, but that was flat out.

I always smile when the v8 boys claim they can get the same mpg as the diesels, especially the d3 v8 owners!

does it mean they are standard dimension too? what oil do you have in the engine?

another thing, how much it takes for the temp gauge to reach the middle? if it's running cold the consumption is higher... a live data log would be good to see how the sensor readings are

however, 24mpg on hilly roads is perfectly normal for a Td5...so is around 27 on road

I get 24 mpg out of my auto which doesn't sound too bad against your 28 mpg.

I only get notifications of replies about one in ten. Weird.
Anyone here had a bigger intercooler and/or variable vain turbo fitted, and have numbers on the difference in fuel economy (if any)?

Yes I can't grumble at 27.7 doing 70. Probably might get near 30 if I did 55-60. Just wondered what next steps I might take if I could, to bump it up a bit more.

Take your foot of the loud pedal! pushing something as big as a Disco, and the streamlining of a brick **** house over 50mph is not worth it. For every 1% increase in speed the fuel consuption goes up 5% and pro rata. There was a chart around years ago showing the huge increase in fuel use per mph over different speeds.

Not sure if I could never do more than 50mph! I haven't seen that chart but I can well imagine. I hear the Penny Farthing was pretty good to the gallon

On holiday when I filled up after 400+ miles at a steady 70mph using cruise control (no stops apart from the French peage tolls) I got 36mpg from my TD5 auto which was quite unexpected but it still cost a lot to fill up. €214 at one point and it was no where near empty...

Seriously?!
I assume you did the calculation right? No insult intended! I just know there's a different between US and UK gallons so I think it's easy to get the calculation wrong using Google on smartphones etc. I could be wrong, and it could work the other way, but 36 in an auto, doing 70, sounds almost too impressive! Wanna sell your engine?
