Hi all

I have been advised of some jobs the p38 4.6 hse needs,

as I am not a mechanic do I need to be worried about them? and with limited funds at the moment could you help me to priorty the jobs.

thanks

the list is

front radius arm
r/h axle end seal
front diff pinion seal
pas pipes (corrodded)
front prop shaft u/j
aux belt
trans cooler pipes (corrodded)

thanks again marc.

Aux Belt (If that goes, no cooling, no charge, no power steering)
PAS Pipes (depending on level of corrosion)
Trans Cooler Pipes (depending on level of corrosion)
RH Axle End Seal (depending on how bad the leakage is)
Front Diff Pinion Seal (depending on how bad the leakage is)
Front Prop Shaft U/J (Can you feel the vibration?)
Front Radius Arm (Is it wandering / can you feel anything?)

It really does depend on how bad each fault is. If the oil is just ever so slightly weeping out of the front diff pinion seal for example, then that could go to the bottom of the list provided you don't mind a spot of oil on your drive and you keep it topped up. If you're topping it up every other day, then it needs to go to the top. The same applies to the other faults. Other contributors on here will of course have differing opinions on the priorities.
Good luck.

I would put the propshaft UJ at the top of the list. Once they start showing wear, they can deterioate very quickly - you really don't want a UJ breaking apart while you're driving. I found it cheaper to buy a complete new front prop from island 4x4 than to replace the UJs.

The aux belt would be next on my list but as Derek says, it really depends how bad the other problems are.

Hi thanks for the reply.

The garage said the car is now safe, as i had over £1600 worth of work done. inc service. but he advised i get the mentioned list done soon., or when cash is better.

Just checking if the list is worthy or is it just getting more money out of me

the car is 1995 and i have owned it over 7 years so i would have thought seals will be on way out.

can i fix any of them???? (i am not a mechanic or have much tools)

thanks marc.

He could be looking for more work but also could really just be covering his arse by mentioning them. Then if you did have a problem at anytime, he can turn round and say 'well I told you about that before' I am surprised though that, if he thought the aux belt worth mentioning, he didn't change it at the time as this is really a 'service' item.
The jobs you mention can be done but, if you're not mechanically minded, you may be better leaving them to a garage, especially things like oil seals.

rowey2006 sorry to hear about your woes.

But I have to say that a garage that carries out £1600 of work including a service and then suggests you should change your aux belt is a garage I wouldn't be rushing back to!!

As has been said I would priorities the belt as it could leave you stranded, where as the other stuff should give you a bit of notice assuming you're not leaving puddles of oil on your driveway.

just to let you know.

the car went in for 4x air bags, due to one blowing out,

but advice doing a service, as it has been 3 years since service.

other work taken as adviced inc in £1600 was

roll bar bushes
autologic
drag link
pads
track rod
fixing brakes freeing calipers as no fluid going to rears
tracking

i dont use this car that often, i just need it in winter.

a lot of this work was due to lack of use, is this true?

i need wheel nuts also as they have swollen, how do they swell?
i think i can do this job my self.

so is the above work which took 2 days value for money?

thanks
