Jacking up a lifted vehicle

I have a 3 tonne jack and two sets of axle stands and for most jobs like removing wheels or doing bearings this is alright. I would just jack up from the axle, get the axle stand underneath and then if needed do the other side of the axle.

But what if you want to do something like changing suspension or remove the axle where you want to get the chassis up on stands not the axle and have the axle as far down as poss.

When I changed the suspension and when I had to change the sump I took it to someones house who had a pit and a pit jack that just had the reach to cope with this but how would you do it at home with standard jack and axle stands and only a couple of bits of timber?

Would you jack it up as high as you can from the axle and get the axle stands underneath the front bit of the chassis using what timber bits I have under the axle stands?

Buy some cinder blocks and concrete slabs to put the stands on ?

no i meant you wouldnt really use cinder blocks

Oh no, when I needed to lift mine I used slabs only not blocks but they just sat under the wheels as I was just getting a bit more clearance for welding underneath


But no wouldn't use blocks, I'd buy some extended stands if you wanted to do something like change the suspension over or at the very worst use something like old railway sleepers stacked up in pairs as thats how one of the breakers yards round here leaves things so you can get parts off them easily, you need a lot of them though to make sure its sturdy

i always use wooden blocks, concrete tend to just explode under a lot of weight, wood slowly starts to crack so give you time to sort it out.

i thought every body new not to use concrete, bricks etc bloody dangerous ,sleepers or hardwood perfect

Yer I use some sleeper off cuts we had left over from doing the garden.

Can drive up on them as well if you want a bit more clearence to get under it
