Axle Stands

There have been recalls on a number of stands *similar* in design to those, above. Broken welds. broken locks, cracks on folds etc.

I have 4 big iron base mothers, from probably the 50's or 60's. Huge threaded shaft and a spinny wheel-nut thing to adjust them.

Apparently you can still buy similar, as "Dawn" brand from Aus... though mine are a different brand:

I have a trolley jack and only lower the vehicle onto the stands, I always leave the jack underneath as a just in case and usually thrown the wheel under the cill so if all else fails and it it all goes pete tong at least there will be some gap between the ground and the vehicle.
Then as I get older I have got more paranoid, no less.

No I don’t think so. I think it was an ifor Williams sticker. I’d just been given the Land Rover so I was being extra careful 🤣

I'm not sure, those you have added look distinctly DIY and reading through this thread people seem to disagree with DIY stands!

also looking more closely at the picture I thought @Def90man said he was never underneath it in that position but I can definitely see a little pile of spanners underneath the middle of the vehicle :rolleyes:

Believe it or not I had to go underneath and unbolt everything before lifting her arse up and rolling the axle out 😛
 
I think the debate is interesting.

Yes, you can buy them cheaper than making them. In this case, as stated earlier, I was looking for plans/drawings for axles stands so I could make my own. It is the fabrication of them that interests me and asking for drawings so that I avoided some of the issues mentioned here to ensure safety. Not some drawing someone has hashed up on a fag packet.

I have no intention of working under a vehicle with ropey stands or jacks, even forklifts as I've seen them fail and the damage done.

The picture Lynall posted, I have four of that type and have never trusted them, so much so I used blocks with them "just in case".

this style is the same as the ones that I use and I trust them completely, however as stated in an earlier post I have a set of oversized ones for a land rover. Mine are I belive an 8 ton pair so each stand is rated at 4 ton, which is more than the complete weight of the 110 let alone only half the vehicle that is supported at any time (i have never needed to have all four wheels off it at the same point) I also do as mentioned earlier in this thread the leave the jack under as extra support.

I am not against diy fabrication (i just don't think axle stands are worth the effort) the set of ramps that I have are a DIY job from an old boy who used to work on military trucks. Just a selection of 6mm flat strap welded together onto a 6mm angle iron fame, but again I use them with confidence on the same premise as my axle stands. If they supported armoured HGVs they will support a land rover with no issue at all.
