my head gasket has gone on my 300tdi

when u start the engine the water shoots up about half a foot from the expansion tank

is this normal or am i looking at the head being warped or a crack in the block ?

if im replacing the engine would a 200tdi be a straight swap ?

i have just been made redundant and dont have much money to fund this so might change the engine myself with a friend is there any special tools i will need other than an engine hoist and basic diy car maintenance tools ?

if i go to a garage what am i expected to pay for them to fix the engine / replace engine

and finally im in county durham (consett) has anyone has experience of a good garage in the area

you will need to take the head off and have it pressure tested... look for crack damage/etc

it might be okay... if it has been allowed to overheat or too much water and oil have mixed you could be looking at an expensive bill.

On the other hand all that it might need is a new gasket and oil/coolant flushed and replaced.

EDIT: your looking at about £500 for a head gasket job from a garage, depending on level of damage.

Could be lucky and it's just the gasket but as nesponge says, you'd be better checking that nothing's fecked before putting it back together.

I had the same thing happen to mine but when the head came off, it was clear that the engine was completely FUBAR! I was reliably informed from this forum that a 200TDi is not a straight swap as the engine mounts are different.

Replacement 300TDi engines run from approx £400 up so might be cheaper buying a rotten Disco with a good engine.

When removing engines, I had a friend come round with his JCB...a lot easier than using an engine hoist. If you do the swap yourself, make sure that the hoist has enough lift in it!

i had a chance of buying a hole disco with a 200 tdi in it but i would rather not bother if its not a straight swap

i thought i might as well take the head off and see what the damage is
i have taken a few pictures of the block and the gasket and i think ill get away with just replacing the gasket for a thicker one what do you guys think ?

I think a decent make head gasget should do the trick, clean the block and head up and fit a new one, its up to you but it maybe worth getting the head skimmed whilst its off.

i really need it back on the road asap but i think your right would be silly if i didnt get the head skimmed

any machine shop can skim a head, look through a yellow pages for engine reconditioners and that should sort you out!!!

You will need to find out what thickness of head gasket you have, normaly indicated by 'teeth' or 'notches' in the gasket itself. Tell the guy at the machine shop who is skimming your head and he will give you a gasket sized to suit the amount machined off.

Also try and get a composite gasket (old type) and not the new shim type, I have found they are not that good when the engine is pushed hard on a regular basis.

got the head back on but im missing a bolt :doh: didnt even need to come out and its now missing its the one in the middle of the two head bolts in this picture can anyone tell me what it is , what size it is and here i can get on asap

Does it lead to a waterway? How deep is the hole it goes into? Try a head bolt in there anyway to try and get an idea of the thread size ect.

TBH I thought they were all head bolts along there?

hi dave yes your right its a waterway if i remember its the same size head as the head bolts but smaller in length all the bolts i have have been to small and the head bolts are all in place now so dont really want to remove one of them again

If it is only for a waterway then go to a local factor and grab a handful of potentials or pop into a breakers. If you are not replacing like with like be careful not to break into another waterway or crack the head.

yeah looks like ill go to the local motor factors tomorrow and get a few bolts just need to be careful they are not to long
