Right, starting this thread off, because Im out of ideas, and want some of that Landyzone knowledge on my side.

Few months ago, my running Disco2 TD5, was hauled off the M6. Whilst being driven, there was a sudden power loss, then smoke out of the exhaust, a lot of smoke.... The engine ran, but it was constantly giving off a blue/white smoke, that I couldnt really tell what it smelled like. Possibly oily. It was recovered and has sat in my garden, and so I need to sort it out.

The injectors were removed yesterday, and they look ok, the washers were sealing all round, and the O rings are round, and not flat. Today I did a compression test on all of the cylinders and got these results:

Cylinder 1: 24bar 350psi
Cylinder 2: 30bar 430psi
Cylinder 3: 29bar 420psi
Cylinder 4: 30bar 430psi
Cylinder 5: 27bar 390psi

I went back and redid Cylinder 1, but it had a little oil in it, which I sucked out, and also span the engine over, and retested at: 32bar 460psi

The increased reading on no1 I think is the oil, that seeped in, helped to seal the rings, anyone agree ?

Just to add, its had a new turbo, no change, and no EGR. I did run the engine with the EGR bypass pipe removed, so it ran on fresh air, and still no difference.

Do I remove the head next ?

Just so you are aware 1 bar is approx 15psi, so for example cyl1 2.4 bar would be about 40psi, and not 350psi you quote?
How and what were you using to measure the compression with?
10 or 15p engine?

My simple mind says if all else runs/works okay then it is head off time.

I was just reading off a photo I took of the gauge, not directly converting it, Im not that anal. The bar readings shouldnt have had a decimal in it... corrected.

Its a 15P, and I used the Sykes Picavant tool, that replaces the injector. Test set is an Ebay chinese special, so Im not holding out that the figures are cock on accurate.

Put the injectors back in, as I needed to move the car to another point in the garden. Videoed the car at idle, and its still smokey. Blue smoke, with no acrid smell. Im going to make an order from Turners for bits, then have another go, and take off the head.

£300 order sent to Turners. Lets hope taking the head off will lead to finding out what the problem is.

I did notice that. The only issue would be the top gasket set, I've already got some LR and Reinz quality parts in stock. So the copper coated steel washers, and crappy o rings will go straight in the bin. I've ordered the Elring head gasket, and the AMC head bolt set, so no issues. Price of the cam carrier sealant shocked me...

Ordered some decent glow plugs, to fit whilst the heads off.

Definitely wouldn't use the injector seals in any of those kits, not just from Turners. I'm not sure why they bother including them. The best glow plugs I have found are the Beru ones (marketed by Borg Warner). But they are not cheap.

Turners aren't bad, they are just selling what is available. They are pretty helpful on the phone, unless you have an issue and they're quite defensive then. Since they stopped rebuilding Td5's I don't suppose they are that bothered.

Turners kit arrived, Elring head gasket, AMC head bolts, Beru glow plugs, Reinz stem seals and rocker gasket, plus a full gasket set, just for the o rings and bits. I've already fitted genuine LR injector O rings and washers, with no difference. When the rains decide to stop, and I get time, I'm taking the head off with the manifolds still attached, as I've got a engine crane to make it easier.

Hoping its just stem seals, or the head gasket, but worst case scenario, its going to be the piston rings.
