Facebooked a friend of my impending purchase of a "54"plate freelander. Someone commented and a concern over the HG issues they have but another friend says this model doesn't have any. It is a 1.8 petrol Xei 5dr. I was sure if it was a k series full stop it had issues. Luckily the HG has been replaced already i have been told by the garage selling it and receiptd to prove apparrently. As a side note if there id a receipt and it contains a part number how do i check if this HG is the better type?

You are about ready to commit suicide in buying a k series. The mechanic will say what ever to sell it . It is well posted here of there faults. You have been warned:eek::eek::eek::eek:

The head gasket has a 99% certainty of needing replacing - again! Avoid!
Get one with a TD4 BMW diesel engine instead.

Noisy, dirty, smelly diesel? Rubbish.

Several of my work mates are/were prejudiced against all diesels - very few of them had driven a diesel recently - if you haven't tried a TD4 do so as soon as possible - my bet is you will no longer want to buy a petrol Freelander.

Is the v6 Freelander fitted with the same doomed engine as the rover 75? I believe Kea of all car companies bought this engine to use in one of theirs. Ended up being a disaster and they ended up releasing an engine recall which was to replace the block with another doomed one.

Warning ..... take the advise you have been given above , my collegue at work bought a petrol freelander and has had 3 hg in 18 months despite being told by mechanics that "this hg will be ok" go for a td4 mine has 122k on now and runs brill.

In fact, it went to China and now features in cars branded Roewe. If you are a true glutton for punishment, you can still buy a car with one of the latest generation versions of the K Series engine: the (essentially Chinese built) MG6. Mind you, if you want to waste the thick end of £20,000 on one of those, you've got even deeper seated personality problems than HGF on a K Series!

It was revised slightly for fitment to the 'new' TF as far as I know with a different head casting and then further revisions for fitment to the TF - NAC originally bought over MG and did the changes to the K series for the TF before being taken over by SAIC who were developing the MG6.

No reported failures as yet in both TF and MG6 so fingers crossed its fixed this time :)

As for the Freelander, if you have the budget for a 2004 model then you would be better getting an older TD4 model, it is much better on fuel and quicker without any HG issues or cambelt to worry about.

Are you aware of the sales figures since the re-launch of the TF and the launch of the MG6? I spend a lot of time on the road and I've yet to see an example of either...

Under 1000 TFs in the UK - I think figure is 800 and something - one of which is mine :D and now 3 years old, MG6 is still quite new on the road in the UK but been on sale in China for a while now and this is where the info reportedly came from
