Since totaling my BMW this morning, I need another vehicle.

My first thought was to get my '95 Disco 300TDi on the road as it just needs a new fuel pump, but when I thought about it, I remembered its MOT ran out last week, it is SORNed, and it could do with new glow plugs, so I decided to leave it and just get it on the road nearer winter because of the money that would need to be spent to drive it now.

Besides, a big 4X4 Discovery isn't something that is really worth the fuel costs in this weather.

So, I called my mate who owns a little used car dealership, and asked him what he had in for me.

And this is the only thing he had that I would think about buying:

2000 Land Rover Freelander 5DR
1.8 Rover K-Series I4
5 Speed Manual
Converted to 2WD for better MPG
Bodywork in great condition with only 1 light scratch on the whole car
£1,750

Major repairs done on the car in the last year:

Head Gasket Changed with MLS Gasket
New tyres fitted
New windscreen fitted
New brake pads and disks
New ABS sensors

And it has had an oil change before being put up for sale.

I think that is a good price for the car, but you Freelander owners will know better than me.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

its a 1.8 !!!! Dont touch !!!

and "converted to 2 wheel drive for mpg" is total BOLLOCKS - it means the VCU has broken - anyhow whats the point of getting a 4x4 if its only 2 wheel drive ??

SEARCH first if you dont believe me ! ;)

I wouldn't be using it for off roading. Just road driving.

And it has been checked over by a Land Rover garage and given a certificate stating it is in great mechanical condition with no faults.

"is in great mechanical condition with no faults"

at this moment in time maybe its working !

go ahead and buy it - it keeps the forum busy :D:D:D

Were you expecting the garage to say, ''well, its got the notoriously fragile 1.8k series engine and the VCU is probably shagged, its the least popular of all of the land rovers and generally to be avoided''.

Hmm?

No, because it isn't being sold by Land Rover...

It is being sold my my friend at his dealership, and he got it checked over by Land Rover.

The 1.8 can be a lot of car for the money but this one just doesn`t sound right - converting to 2wd for better economy sounds as if it is masking some underlying problem with the 4wd, and taking that into account its not a bargain at this price.
For that kind of money you could fix the Discovery or go a fair way to fixing the BM (assuming its new panels and a new Rad).
My instinct would be to avoid it and shop around for a bit longer.

To update you all, I didn't buy the 1.8, I bought a 2003 Freelander 2.5 KV6 5-Speed Automatic with FSH, new tyres, new brakes, new cam belt, new battery, new plugs, oil, filters, and new track rod ends as they were getting a bit wooly.

And the price was only £5,500, not too bad, especially as he wanted 6 Grand for it!

I've already given it a good test drive (red line for a good time, if you're in the speed limit you ain't goin' fast enough kinda thing!), and she is as beautiful to drive as she is in condition.

I have to say though I don't know exactly what they were thinking when they put one of those "racer" exhausts on... So I replaced it for a proper exhaust that does what it is supposed to - Makes the engine quiet! Ugh, youths!

2.5 and 1.8 were known for the same HGF fault. Did you actually search these forums? No wonder there's a lot of head slapping from those in the know....

That said if the work on the new MLS gasket change also included the upgraded oil rail, then apparently there's a very good chance it wont fail again!
