Is this a bargain

Hello all. I am new to potential Range Rover motoring.

My father in law is getting a new range rover. They've offered him £1500 for his old one which he's had from almost new. It is a p reg 4.0. Main dealer service from new and 79,000 miles. No problems, no dents or scratches. Green with a kind of rough textured beige cloth interior which is actually quite nice!

Anyway, he's offered it to me as I need a car and only do about 3,000 per annum. Is this a bargain?

He has already offered the petrol. Don't think I'll push him on the mats as it has almost a years tax.

By the way has anybody ever seen a RR with this kind of cloth interior? It's a kind of dark beige fabric which is not like anything I've seen as they always seem to be leather.

The "peasant" spec cloth trim isnt that common - usually ex-cop cars,some dont even have A/C or even worse they are manual gearbox.

i seen one of these! no side steps, no climate control/air con, no sunroof, no leather, manual transmission and sh1t wheels.
mines on the right, looks odd seeing a r/rover with no sunroof??

This is definitely not ex police. It is Auto and has air con etc but no sun roof.

Is it easy to fit the side steps?

Side steps are relatively easy to fit.

Definitely sounds like a good deal!

Any clues on best place to get them and is there more than one type/quality?

They cost a fortune from a Land Rover dealer, as you would expect.

You do get cheap after market ones, which are made of plastic over a metal frame.

However, rubber coated ones are better.

Bought some from Sidesteps UK - Land Rover and Range Rover side steps and A bars really good value and came with all fittings and instructions. Took less than 15 mins to fit.

For £1,500 you'll be obliged to this gentleman for a P reg r rvr and his daughter. You can judge this deal by the way the first one went.

Knowing the history of any car, let alone a range rover, is worth £1,500 of anybody's money I would've said. Inwardly digest the tales of woe on this forum.

Thanks for replies. I am now the proud owner for better or worse. Father in law keeps dropping in to explain my indebtedness to him.

After a run out last night it all seems to be fine and having had a good clean I have identified a few issues:

The lower tailgate seems to be corroding on the unseen bit at the base and this is just starting to bubble the paint very slightly where it can be seen. Also bolts and loops that accept the boot catches are a bit rusty.

The drivers seat squab has split along the beading a bit where it takes the most wear from getting in and out. Can you get a replacement cover in the strange brown cloth?

There seem to be an issue with starting the car whereby you have to click "open" on the remote sometimes or it will not turn the motor over even though the lights are on.

The centre cubby box has a small crack on the lid.

Other than that fine. I like this car a lot! I will put a few pics on shortly.

Most air con cars dont have a sun roof, not much point as aircon works best in a sealed environment... after all are you gonna try n get your aircon to cool the country, which is what it would do if you have an open window / sunroof

It does have an immobiliser but having opened the doors with remote from locked, you then have to click open again to start the engine. This is not always the case though and it will usually start first turn. It is obviously connected to the automatic locking system but seems a bit illogical. I'm only concerned because it may decide not to let me start at all one day!
