I've had a few Land Rovers over the last 20 or so years and they've all fascinated me and driven me mad with their quirks and foibles.
Here's my Land Rover history.
I got into these things via my first 4x4 which was a Sh***n. Nice car but it rotted away, even the roof panel went rusty. and I thought it time to get a proper car; a Land Rover 90 Turbo hard top with stuff bolted all over it: chequer-plates, side-runners, long seats in the back, dog-guard, etc and I fitted spot-lights, side windows etc, usual stuff.
Then I was offered an early Disco 200Tdi cheaply because it had suffered awful abuse and in 2 years it cost me thousands in repairs: that was not a cheap car!
Next was a Disco II Td5; beautiful thing in Oslo Blue which I had for years until the rear chassis simply crumbled away.
In an act of desperation I bought my present LR, a Freelander 2 Td4SE with 140000 miles on it, dodgy rear shocks and what turned out to be a failure of the Haldex unit to disengage. I really love this car: it's so comfortable to sit in and drive, it's way more powerful than any other car I've ever had; I feel cossetted by it, it lights the way for me to approach it, the seats warm up when required on cold mornings and it has a Alpine sound system with a bass woofer under the floor. What more could a bloke of my age want? (74 years young).
It now has new Monroe shocks, huge wheels which, happily, make the speedo 100% accurate, and I have, in the absence of parts for the Haldex unit, wired a switch from the fuse-box to isolate the rear-wheel drive until I need it.
I do miss the low-range gearbox but I love this car!
