Having read all the horror stories about the k series engines i did purchase one as a td4 same year/condition instantly added ££££££££ to the sale price in comparision to the 1.8.I made sure that it had the HG done allready and to be fair i am pleased with its performance so far.
But (i realise loads will disagree)every time i come on here theres more and more posts about TD4 probs, lacking power, turbo issues, pipes e.t.c
and it makes me think yes the petrols are subject to HGF and are slated like mad but to me it seems the td4 can be just as bad.............

the problems with TD4's are generally far cheaper to repair than a headgasket. They also tend to go wrong less often.

Q:Is it better?

A: yes.

the main reason for more td4 posts is there are probably more td4 engines on the road than k series and l series added together, so the law of average dictates more problems.

personally, had it not been for the hg problems the k series would possibly be regarded as a good engine in the fl1 i owned one for 2 years and found it great fun to drive, poss better than my now td4. that said i did have a problem with a burnt out exhaust valve, it caused engine to lumpy idle. tim.

worked on the maintenance at Powertrain from the start of the k series engine build then a 1.1 and 1.4 engine seen all the mods BMW did to them from changing to cintered valve guides to sourcing cheaper cylinder linings ,gaskets changes from screen applied sealants on all mated surfaces so opted for a td4 when land rover was sold off to Ford did try a 1.8 k series had to rev the bollocks of it to get any speed or maintain it,
yes the td4 is a bmw engine then most of the electrics ,fuel injection, coils are german.
Mag wheels sourced from Turkey, cranks from India
the early freelanders main wiring looms still had the VAG AUDI stamped on the main ecu plugs the later Freelander I believe have volvo diesel power unit (owned by Ford who have been the biggest importer of foreign parts and cars since I owned the mk1 golf)
