Hi folks, I write you to help others with their cooling issues.
first of all, if you will change your thermostat, please check your water pump.
My experience:
Bad purchase, just I'm a hot and the worst buyer when Land Rover are involved.
Me and my wife bought our 4th Land Rover, a freelander td4, with 142.000 kms. When I went to check it, it was raining and I don't check all of the car.
Results: the car doesn´t have rear traction, the previuos owner remove the propshaft, diff, and axles. Real a bul$/#t.
Then, some issues with power, resuming all, in one year, just 3 month to use it, all the other time, was on maintenance.
Now, what we fix on it and what we experiment.
1. Temp gauge dont go up
we check and read a lot of post on internet. On resume, thermostat not working. We choose not to change it on that time because we was looking for all of the spares to make a big purchase.
2. Lost power, random RPM
After a big fail when we was driving work, the car start going up and down on rpm's. whe check it all and the real problem, the failure was the sensor of fuel rail pressure.
3. At this time, we choose to buy some spares, thermostat, fuel pressure rail sensor, PCV module, all the filters (air, oil, diesel).
We choose to change all and the thermostat. The car start running again.
4. Temp fail, high temp and and the engine stopped, thermostat ok, but not flushed all the cooling system.
On this time, we check it all and find a new issue. The waterpump was not pumping, so.... new purchases have to come.
Ok, now we have all the spares, start dismounting the thermostat. to do this, we lift the freelander and stack it on some jacks. Then we remove the engine mounting on the RHD (near air intake). Since now, with another jack (you have to put it before removing engine support) and lift the engine all you can (please check the other engine support to prevent broke it).
Now, you have to remove the chain belt, and remove the four screws of the water pump. Clean all the area where it have to be fixed and install a new one. What we done to fix it with it gasket was use a litle yarn and pass it throw the pump. When the pump was on his place with the gasket correctly, we remove the yarn and start scrweing.
After all of this changes, we put coolant and start flushing, for more information about this, please visit this post (click here).
I hope this help someone, count on me to help.
Best wishes.
