Is my FL two wheel drive

Thats probably the best thing to do or a recon unit but how do you tell if a second hand one is OK until its been fitted, there are a couple on ebay that say they're good but who knows.

Get one off a forum member if you can. They crop up on here every now and again. Or speak to Bell to see if they can help.

I'm pretty skint at the moment so it will have to stay as it is for the time being, but there are 2 landrover specialists close to me so I may see what they can do when I've got some money.

Update, I went to see one of the local Landy specialist's today to ask about the key I ordered and told them about my IRD problem they said they can fit a second hand unit for me for £150 fitted and they will test the VCU to make sure its OK so I've booked it in on friday.
I had some more tyres fitted to the back wheels to match the front ones fitted a couple of weeks ago so hopefully I will have 4WD at the weekend.

Got My F/L back from the garage didn't seem to drive any different on the way home and no problem reversing so all seems ok:)
While there I spotted a bike rack on the shelf the type that bolts on with the spare wheel in used but good condition they wanted £20 so I snapped it up.

I got a bit suspicious as the invoice says on it "changed IRD OUTPUT and oil £150" instead of changed IRD and oil.
I have jacked up the drivers side rear wheel and it still turns easily no resistance so I think they have just changed the pinion gear on the back of the IRD which is not what I asked for I thought the price was too cheap I need to go see what he has to say but can't go until Tuesday.

Chock wheels
put gearbox in neutral
release the handbrake
Lift 2 wheels on the same side
turn rear wheel and the front lifted wheel should turn in the same direction

if the front wheel doesn't turn then:

check front prop turns when you turn the front wheel. If not the vcu is open circuit. If the front prop does turn then the ird is not connected inside = something missing.

Thanks for the input Hippo but isn't the way I tested it valid as its the way the VCU is tested in another thread using a socket breaker bar and a weight the wheel should have a resistance but turn slowly where as mine can be turned with one finger.

From what I understand you think yer Freelander is front wheel drive only. If it is, then the above I wrote will confirm if it is or not.

If you just want to test the vcu then lift 1 wheel and do the one wheel up test. Also search for Turnip Test.

OK thanks, its raining again outside now so will have to leave it for now but I don't think its looking good.

I was nights last night and took the F/L into the end of my works and jacked up both offside wheels and each one could be turned without the other turning.
I lay down and had a look and there is fresh sealer around the crownwheel housing so it looks like all they have changed is the crownwheel which hasn't fixed it and wasn't what they said they would do.

I've been back them this morning and voiced my concerns about what has been done to the F/L and he has admitted they only changed the crownwheel but insists that is what is called the IRD and was what was agreed to change but also insists that it is now 4WD not 2WD and that it was tested jacked up on the ramp and that all 4 wheels drive.
He has booked me in in the morning to get it up on the ramp and show me it working in 4WD but did agree that with the back wheel jacked up I shouldn't be able to turn th wheel easily like I can.

There are a few things wrong here. The thing that is on the back of the IRD is the output pinion and not the crownwheel. If the pinion has been changed then why? and was the IRD stripped so a matching crownwheel can be fitted? Does it have prop shafts in place? If not then it ain't going to be 4WD regardless of how many output pinions are fitted to the IRD.

He told me that he knows all about landrovers and worked in a main dealer workshop for 15 years then asked if I had selected 4WD so I asked him to show me how as I think that its permanent 4WD he then took my key started up and selected HDC on the gearstick:D

He must have got quite good at making the tea in those 15 years!

Which shows he shouldn't be anywhere near a Freelander!

Tell him this is an ird:
