It's had the propshafts and VCU removed, but you don’t know why.
It could be that the VCU began to go still, and someone took the assembly off, so to prevent damage to the IRD or rear differential.
Or more commonly, the VCU went stiff, which caused damage to the IRD, which is now hidden because the propshafts have been removed.
Before you do anything, do an oil change on the IRD, and see if the old oil contains metallic particulates. If it does, then the IRD will need replacement or a rebuild, before replacement propshafts and a reconditioned VCU are fitted.
Thank you Nodge , I was tilt it was removed for fuel economy and was sold on because never going back to 4 x 4 but now I am starting to wonder if there was something wrong. I have been offered a full propshaft with VCU that is all working for very cheap by look of it , so will buy that and check the IRD oil before fitting..thank you

Oh the number of times we've heard that bit of BS.
Unfortunately sellers use the "props removed for better fuel consumption" as a way to hide some fault with the system.
For the record, removing the propshaft makes so little difference to the MPG. It's almost impossible to measure.
Be careful with second hand VCUs, as unless they're tested by someone who knows how to test it properly, it's best to assume it needs reconditioning.
