Is it worth changing a steering box with slight leak?

Would appreciate views - have a 2003 D2 with a steering box that has had a slight leak for the last couple of years. A few drips a day - so not pouring out, and after a decent clean got past MOT without an advisory (but has had for the last three years about this). Is this something just to live with, to replace seals (£150), to replace with a "decent second hand one" (£250) or a reconditioned one (£350)? Have been told changing the seals is a waste of money as will invariable still leak, and there is no guarantee that the second hand one and the recon one will not leak in 6 months!

Cheers..

I've been using lucas stop leak in my 95 disco for the last three years as A temporary fix until I can find the time to rebuild the steering box. It hasn't leaked a drop for the last 18 months, prior to that it slowed the leak right down. I was at one point going through nearly half a litre a week of fluid. The steering is fine, if anything it seemed to tighten it up a bit and took some slop out of the wheel feel.

It Works, and isn't that expensive.

I will say though unless you drain the system first and then refill with only the stop leak it will take a while to seal the leaks but a after a while it will be dry.

I assume your talking about the leaking fluid via the output shaft.
I had this issue with my old RRc and lived with it for three years, then the output shaft seals were replaced only to start leaking two weeks later due to the shaft also being worn, so time for a replacement box
A second hand may or may not leak now or in the future, if it doesn't leak does it mean its "decent"? .
As far as recons go there's already Forum posts on the subject of them leaking one year later and even straight away after fitting. :(
So it up to you.

I don't have any problems with my discos steering box, but if I did I would still do what I did years ago and get a genuine one fitted or now if genuine was not available at least an OEM one.

Just done the output seal on mine two weeks ago and it's leaking again. Will live with it for a while.:frown:

Mine started leaking a few months ago and I was looking at options (rebuild etc.). A few drips some days, nothing on others. My last disco did it for over a year. It doesn't drip enough for the reservoir level to drop noticeably, just enough to mess up my new driveway (it's got a sheet of chipboard under it now)! The MOT tester said it wasn't a problem and that every D2 he sees is leaking to some extent.
I've ordered some Lucas Stop Leak (thanks for that tip DiscoPol)

Hi,
As Discopol mentioned , try Lucas Stop Leak !
Got it my V8 ! And hasnt lost a drop for 2 yrs. Cheap fix, which when feeling better, will do properly.
Just trying to decide what to do with V8 ! Since getting 300Tdi might strip it or sell complete !!! Cant make mind up since bloody back went unhitching Sankey. :-(
