Trying to work out of the IRD has gone (again) or both front drive shafts need replacing.

Driving along motorway (approx 55mph) something went caboom and it felt like a tyer had blown. Gear stick has gone all floppy and there is the most horrendous wobble throughout the whole car. Gears still change fine, but anything over 10mph and the wobble / shake is there. Have disconnected prop and problem still the same. there is a lot of play in both front drive shafts.

The IRD was replaced about 2 years ago, i can't remember the symptoms then as the ex was driving it! I have a sinking feeling it could be on its was to the scrappy.

Any Ideas / experience

Did you have your VCU changed at the same time? Are you running same brand/size/wear tyres?

What engine and do you get any issues when in neutral and revving the engine. As you have a loose gear stick then don't think it will be the IRD, more likely a gearbox or clutch issue.

It's a 2002, 2.0l, it still wobbles / shakes when coasting in neutral, revving the engine doesn't make any difference either way.
wondering if it could be drive shafts?

Sounds like a gearbox problem or driveshaft faillure (not IRD), maybe one of the output bearings (LH and/or RH) I would check both driveshafts, if there is a lot of play: bearing, or CV joint. Is it loosing (gearbox)oil?

I haven't noticed any oil leakage, I've got a lorry mechanic friend looking at it for me, apparently there is alot of play in both dive shafts, the original plan was to change them and see if that solved the issue.
I did change a CV boot 4 months ago and in hindsight should have just changed the whole shaft as a nice member on here suggested.
