I would like to replace the ird rear pinion bearing on my 2001 v6 Freelander – pictured below (ignore the arrow). Can this be done without removing the whole ird and splitting it open? I’m hoping I can disconnect the prop, and remove the rear pinion/cover and change the bearing without too much fuss.
Does anyone know the part number of the ird rear pinion bearing? I’ve seen several complete ird bearing kits on the web but no individual bearings for sale.
The fault I’m looking to fix is the whine it’s had shortly after the auto was replaced. We know it's not the auto, and the main stealer disconnected the ird pinion to allow them to remove the engine/auto/ird as a whole unit. Mondo mode cures the noise, but it’s still detectable with chassis ears. Proportional to the speed of the car, and happens when in neutral (I know this is bad for an auto). So we’re confident it’s the right thing to do.
