Hi all,
I have been fiddling about trying to find out why i have no temp gauge and think i have found a break in the wire just before the sensor plug inside the insulation.
Thing is........while i had my wee hand jammed under the inlet manifold feeling about ,i noticed that there is no plug connected to the air intake sensor under the manifold, and even stranger i cannot find a plug for it on the loom in that area:confused:

Anyone have any ideas on this and although the car runs well, what are the effects of this being unplugged?

Car is diesel with EGR.

Thanks in advance
Ed

Thanks for getting on it so quick Wammers. Alloy manifold, and sensor is about an inch or so away from what i think is the MAP pipe on underside of manifold.Certainly no available plug on the loom for it.Could it be that someone has changed the inlet manifold on mine at some point?

What makes you think it's egr you can't just change manifold as the exhaust manifold would have to be changed as well or blocked off?? What year is it??

Yes they have to have done. Inlet air sensor for what good it is, only really services air density for EGR is in MAF. Inlet air temp sensor for P38 was at front of manifold just underneath. So the manifold maybe off another type of vehicle. Look at RAVE non EGR fuel system page 6.

I know it should not have it but it seems i have an alloy manifold with the IAT sensor and EGR, although the IAT is disconnected and does not seem to be correct to the car.:confused:

Should have added car is 2001.Looks like someone has replaced the plastic version with this one ,possibly from an Omega as is has no BMW logo on top, and has IAT where described by Wammers but still has EGR valve and pipe and correct for RR exhaust manifold.Good thing is its not needed and my panic was unfounded .Thanks for clearing that up for me Wammers.

As far as I'm aware you can't fit an EGR to the alloy manifold, does your car have a MAF? If it does the manifold has been swapped at some point. On the MAF equiped engine, IAT is sensed in the MAF so the manifold IAT is not needed. If you car does not have a MAF the it should have the manifold IAT:)

Good point P38 EGR won't fit on non EGR manifold. But the sensor is also in the wrong place for it to be a P38 manifold.

First of all what year is it ?? Second look at number one on air intake and tell me what way the nuts and studs face look at my photo and you can see a stud sticking up this is because I have a pre 1999 head the studs on cylinder one and two are opposite these would be correct for an ally air intakev also can you see the small tube like going in to my egr this leads back to the exhaust if your studs are the ones like mine on my head being used for the black air intake you have the right head and just your air manifold has been changed .

Hi Keith, yes the car has a MAF. Thats possibly why the IAT on mine is disconnected and has no Appropriate plug on the loom as the cars loom is for MAF and EGR.

OOOOOOHH i love a conundrum me :D

Correct but you can fit either head or air manifold to either ideal with tweaks but its harder on an egr head studs need to be drilled on either head and ally to egr must have exhaust manifold changed or blocked

So someone has done the full monty to remove the EGR, do you have the vacuum pump on the front of the cam and the modulator on the bulkhead?
It's a common mod over here as if all the bits are removed it seems the MOT testers accept it as not fitted originally.:D:D

The plot thickens!!!!!
Keith: i still have the full EGR on an alloy manifold.Vacuum pump,check.Modulator,check.MAF,check.

Got the lot me :D:D:D

Defender 300tdi:you have shown me yours and its only fair i show you mine :D just waiting for my son to send me the pic i just took on my phone-my old ****ty laptop does nothing- and i will post for your perusal :)

Ok thanks I'm confused too can't see how an alloy air intake can support egr valve although I'm not sure what the omega set up was like it's the only thing I think of ...

Hope this shows what i have.

Please excuse the high visibility securing device on the right of picture(red cable tie) ;)

Damm it you missed the egr right a bit!!so as said before 2001 no wire there for air sensor not sure but I think you have an omega set up the egr should have a pipe going to the Solinoid on the bulk head behind the eas air compressor , ps glad I'm not the only one with swapsys seems common practice eek ps you have a pre1999 engine I can tell by the studs for the air intake

Yes EGR has an air pipe going to the modulator on the bulkhead.
Will post a better pic shortly.

So my dear old lady has had a replacement engine of unknown origin at some point, funny how that is not in the service history. :D:D:D:D:D
