Hi all,

I have a 1998 Discovery (3.9l petrol). I had been having some difficulty with the key turning in the ignition barrel and then finaly, a couple of months ago it stopped turning all together. SO a call to our breakdown service and the friendly chaps took 5 mins to remove the steering cowling and the ignition barrel and that way I could start the car with anything (quite frightning how quick it was !!). However there was still a requirment that I had the key fob because I needed to use that to cancel the imobiliser.

No problem, everything was fine for a while but then last weekend the battery showwed signs of having run down (a problem I have been having for a while) and the fob didnt appear to be unlocking the car so as usual I took the battery off charged it and put it back on. Trouble is that now the key fob wont do anything. It wont unlock the car - and it wont cancel the imobiliser (there is a flashing red light in the shape of a car on the dash).

What can I do?

HELP!!!

Cheers in advance

disconnect the vehicles battery.

Wait 10 mins and then reconnect it.

After reconnecting it press the buttons on the remote slowly alternating between the two. It can take quite a few presses to resync the remote. This is normal.

Wow - superfast reply - thanks.

But I just tried it and couldnt get it to work. I did the following:-

Disconnected the battery
Waited 15 mins
Reconnected the battery
Stood outside the vehicle pressing first the lock and then the unlock buttons on the keyfob - I did this for about 5 mins and then unlocked the passenger door with the key and tried the alternating key presses for another few mins whilst inside the vehicle. Then I tried doing this with the ignition turned on (IE the dash showing the imobliser symbol) for another 5 mins.

You said to alternate slowly, how slowly? I was pressing each button for about 1 second and then waiting a second and pressing the other one for about a second.

Thanks

John

That shoulda done it.

If the ignition has been ripped apart as you suggest. look for the immobiliser receiver hoop that is supposed to sit over the ignition barrel. (It should have a some wires coming out of it). Try holding the remote right up to it. You shouldn't need to press anything.

If you have another remote, try using that for the first procedure and/or for holding next to the receiver.

Thanks for the advice Ratty, I will give it a try in a bit (may have to leave it till tomorrow). Win or lose thanks for your help.

If the immobiliser is spiked try the following....

disconnect the battery - negative terminal first. (you can actually leave the posiutive terminal connected if you wish) ... Leave for approx 15 minutes. Re connect the battery - positive terminal first and THEN the negative terminal. Then try your key fob - I assume the battery in the key fob is OK here!

Sometimes immobilisors get spiked by conecting the positive terminal last after battery replacement/connection problems.

Rgds and good luck!

If your key fob is the type with a little red light, check the light comes on when you press the buttons. I've got two fobs that will lock, but not unlock (that's for a TD5)

sorry for the delay in replying - thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a try - it is entirly possible that I connected the positive terminal last.

Actualy the first thing I did when the fob wouldnt work was to change the battery (always possible that I have bought a duff battery of course !!)

Thanks for the suggestion

Cheers

Unfortunatly neither of my fobs have lights on :-(

Cheers

Sorry! Must be a TD5 thing. At least it probably makes yours cheaper to replace when they stop working.
