Disco 2 New Fob Required..?

I have owned a Discovery 2 (TD5) for more than 10 years. I bought the vehicle in Malawi, SE Africa, from the original owner, who had bought the vehicle from a UK dealer and shipped it to Malawi new in 2003.

Recently, I discovered that the spare key fob (Valeo) that I’d ‘stashed’ under the vehicle for emergencies had got wet and no longer works. Then, almost simultaneously, the fob I use has started to misbehave; it’s not the key fob battery as I changed that.

I’m fairly sure the problem is with the key fob because if I push the buttons carefully, at a certain angle, it will operate the central locking system.

I have lost the EKA code card given to me on purchasing the vehicle but I have the number stuck onto the original 2002 key fob circuit-board.

I want to buy a key fob replacement that will work on my vehicle and would be grateful for any guidance / advice.

NB: No Landrover dealer in Malawi but I can be assisted by my Son in UK...

if all you need is another case I get mine off E bay UK

You can't buy a fob to work just like that, it will need programming no way around that

As @frostythor says, get a new fob, or two. If you look hard enough you'll find a seller who will sell you a pack containing the empty fob with the key blank, a battery and two microswitches.
For little money.

Needs new microswitches

I only needed the case, but how about this , took me all of 30 sec to find, and you can remove your old blade and put it in the new fob

DON'T feck about with anything that needs reprogramming etc. You have the circuit board, all you need is one, or two, of these.


As I said, comes with batt and 2 microswitches.

I fitted new switches to both of mine as I used to have a side job in evenings of repairing fobs. mainly Vauxhall, Jaguar, and Citroen.

Still have a big pile of the flat square Jag ones, but the small switch like my link I went through hundreds. I bought the longer life ones.

If you can solder OK, a quick job to change.

You can for a Defender, sort of.
You purchase a key and dongle you stick in the OBD socket, programs the key and Bob's yer uncle!
Return the dongle for a refund.

If you still have both keys, then you could swap the stuff from the partially working key into the fob exterior that you had kept under the landy. The first thing that goes is the plastic bits you press, then the microswitches.
You could even maybe de-solder the microswitches that work and replace them in the fob that works some of the time.

(You do not even need to remove the metal key from the old fob, you can still use it and use the new fob with the electronics in it to unlock and lock the door. I have been doing this for years now.
The only very slight downside is that the immobiliser will not deimmobilise if you put the key in the ignition, you have to deimmobilise it by pushing the unlock button on the fob, if you are slow to start the car after getting in . You have about 30 seconds to do it before needing to repush the unlock button on the fob. People will tell you that the fob only has to be in close proximity to the ignition barrel, but that is twaddle.)

so you contradicted me to say i was right by mentioning the defender which has different security system?.. though you can do that for D2 as well but that dongle means programming and that's all i said, that it needs programming

Sorry wasn't a contradiction at all. I was pointing out an alternative way of doing things as your post sounded as if you may need a Nanocom or such like.
