hi this is my first post.
im almost about to buy a 2005 1.8 freelander with 13000 miles from a land rover dealer but it seems like the 1.8s get ALOT of negative press.
Surely as they slightly updated it in 2004/5 they should be ok now?
it comes with a year land rover warranty and i wont be doing many miles in it,
should i still get one?

thanks, kris

Nope!!!! And welcome tae the mad hoose BTW;) :D

depends on how much, and whether it has had the head gasket mod carried out. If it was my money, I'd go for the Td4. But you pays your money, you takes your choice. Do a search on this forum for problems with the 1.8 petrol. The general consensus is "DON'T DO IT", but each to their own.

Oh, and hello by the way

Let me get this right your thinking of buying a car which you know has had loads of bad press and which has lots of expensive problems and your asking if you should still buy it.

MMMMMMMMMMHHHHHHHH Let me think about this NO YOU BLOODY SHOULDN'T

You are obviously a person who likes to go against the flow - someone of independant thought and who still believes in fairies - not surprising if you are looking at a a Gaylander.
Dont listen to them - you go for it - 1.8K series Hippoo is a brill motor. - yu can pick one up now fur £500 - sum peeps are even giving them away. If yu wanta car that you dont intend to do many miles in (you wont) and have really deep pockets then go for it - its a good way to keep the local economy flourishing.

All depends what you want the 1.8 for.

The k-series is for petrol heads who like to rev the engine a bit of power when you need it, if thats not your thing then a diesel would be your better option.

New MLS gasket wasnt released for aftermarket sale until March 2006. I dont know if any k-series have them fitted when they rolled out off the assembly line. Powertrain who made the k-series stopped production when Rover went down the tubes.

do we win a prize if we can decypher that

have had to move to a TD4 as the insurance was alot higher if petrol. ( TD4 - Cheaper)

The high insurance topped off the reasons not to buy 1.8, hopes to find a decent TD4
