Just wondering if anyone out there could give me some ideas for a rear winch bumper for my disco 1, looked on ebay etc but nothing stands out

To be honest I can't see the point in sticking a winch on the rear bumper. The discovery suffers enough from silly amounts of rear overhang as it is, so why add a winch bumper which (correct me if I'm wrong) would make it worse. unless of course your disco is bobtailed or what not.

The solution WLM has posted is a good one and is precisely what im planning on doing with mine albeit slightly differently. Plus unlike WLM's mine isn't bobtailed.

I have welded my winch tray to the chassis as close as i can to the rear chassis cross member. But low enough so I've got plenty enough room for a winch and that it doesn't protrude from below the chassis.

That's about as far as I've got thus far but the next step is to cut the rear chassis cross member out completely and weld a piece of 6mm sheet in its place on the end of the chassis rails.

I will also be moving the body mounts on the chassis forward as I'm also replacing the bodies rear cross member with some box section to bring the whole back of the it in line with the boot door. Means I've got to do a bit of chassis chopping but will make it look a bit better by not having a mahoosive bumper sticking out.

Then make a custom bumper to sit flush against the new rear cross member on the chassis but also make it strong enough to take some abuse. Add on some recovery points, bumper lights, etc.

I do apologise if that made no sense, i do tend to babble on a bit:p

oh, my winch isnt on bumper, its welded between my chassis but i hav a custom tank in boot not the bigplastic thing under neath..im not bobbd either

Theres a trick to making it not stick out past the standard ;)

that is the method but done in a slightly different manner as his is bobbed

A good attempt but theres a better method ;) think bobtail but don't bob it

If you're doing that you may as well do the swing-away like what I'm slowly doing for mine, I got bored halfway through and stopped plus as its my own vehicle I can pick and choose when/what to build for it :p

;)

Basically you're looking at replacing your chassis crossmember with a winch tray but then making the rest of a regular winch bumper to fit flush up against it, almost as if you're grafting a complete front winch bumper and merging it into the chassis, cutting away things that get in its way and welding them back up using the bumper itself as structure.

Wouldn't actually be that difficult IMO and I might even be tempted to start with a ready made winch bumper, maybe a defender unit for example.

You got a bloory answer fer everythink int ya doc!! :p Although i do understand what your saying :)

Tis just my way of doing it i guess probably over complicating it but meh! :D The idea looks good in me head ;)

Mainly its getting rid of the bumper that pokes out. The less over hang the better imo.

So what's wrong with my attempt to weld the winch tray as close to the cross member as possible? Personally i don't see a problem as I'll have more room a bit further back rather than directly below the bodies rear cross member.

Thought about a swing away but thought sod it the spare can go in the boot. I prefer the look of a disco without a spare hanging off the back.

Hmmm.. Tis not a bad shout using a ready made bumper! Trust me not to think of that

For what im thinking in my head though would probably be easier to make something up from scratch.

And don't worry i haven't forgotten about the doors I just haven't got home from work yet :(

I looked into movin the whole bumper flush with the back door, but when i got down to it noticed the fuel tank stick out further than the body, how did you get around this? Move the tank?

Defender unit wont work, you don't want to use a winch tray either, looking to minimise everything so no winch tray. You've got the right idea though the crossmember has to go!

You kinda need some hangover so you can have access to the free spool unless you want to just rely on using the remote feed!

No winch tray as above though :) thats how you do it although no problem in using one just slight overkill

Fuel tank doesn't stick out more than the body ?

Tank doesn't get moved anyway :) as above its a cut and shut job

I reckon it would be reasonably simple once you started the job, so you better get cracking, everyone can help along the way! :D

And yeah regards the doors thanks rob, problem is we are miles away!

hardest part of the job is choosing what you want it to look like :p and also dropping the fuel tank so you don't end up blowing up the disco if you're running petrol ;)

Haha we used to always sing the song "Fire in the Disco" when we were welding on it.

Keeps you entertained, you know, small things :D

Might have to start singing that :D mines been on fire several times already from welding

Doc, regards to the free spool operation, i was thinking about running the rear winch with an air operated free spool. So i can tuck it right under and not have to worry about it.

Also regards to the winch tray surely having one there would add protection to the winch? Like say if you come down off a ledge type obstacle and the rear of the chassis drops down and hits it hard as an example.

Also im not going to have to worry about a fuel tank being there mine is being moved to behind the front seats when i can afford a custom one to be built (don't trust my welding enough to build my own)
