The discovery suffers enough from silly amounts of rear overhang as it is, so why add a winch bumper which (correct me if I'm wrong) would make it worse.unless of course your disco is bobtailed or what not.
Theres a trick to making it not stick out past the standard
The solution WLM has posted is a good one
that is the method but done in a slightly different manner as his is bobbed
I have welded my winch tray to the chassis as close as i can to the rear chassis cross member
A good attempt but theres a better methodthink bobtail but don't bob it
Then make a custom bumper to sit flush against the new rear cross member on the chassis but also make it strong enough to take some abuse. Add on some recovery points, bumper lights, etc.
If you're doing that you may as well do the swing-away like what I'm slowly doing for mine, I got bored halfway through and stopped plus as its my own vehicle I can pick and choose when/what to build for it
Basically you're looking at replacing your chassis crossmember with a winch tray but then making the rest of a regular winch bumper to fit flush up against it, almost as if you're grafting a complete front winch bumper and merging it into the chassis, cutting away things that get in its way and welding them back up using the bumper itself as structure.
Wouldn't actually be that difficult IMO and I might even be tempted to start with a ready made winch bumper, maybe a defender unit for example.

The solution WLM has posted is a good one and is precisely what im planning on doing with mine albeit slightly differently. Plus unlike WLM's mine isn't bobtailed.
I have welded my winch tray to the chassis as close as i can to the rear chassis cross member. But low enough so I've got plenty enough room for a winch and that it doesn't protrude from below the chassis.
That's about as far as I've got thus far but the next step is to cut the rear chassis cross member out completely and weld a piece of 6mm sheet in its place on the end of the chassis rails.
I will also be moving the body mounts on the chassis forward as I'm also replacing the bodies rear cross member with some box section to bring the whole back of the it in line with the boot door. Means I've got to do a bit of chassis chopping but will make it look a bit better by not having a mahoosive bumper sticking out.

Mainly its getting rid of the bumper that pokes out. The less over hang the better imo.
So what's wrong with my attempt to weld the winch tray as close to the cross member as possible? Personally i don't see a problem as I'll have more room a bit further back rather than directly below the bodies rear cross member.
Thought about a swing away but thought sod it the spare can go in the boot. I prefer the look of a disco without a spare hanging off the back.
I looked into movin the whole bumper flush with the back door, but when i got down to it noticed the fuel tank stick out further than the body, how did you get around this? Move the tank?
I reckon it would be reasonably simple once you started the job, so you better get cracking, everyone can help along the way!
