Hi all.

I bought a 1.8 petrol ,18k on a 54 plate on Monday and the problem have begun. When travelling in any gear the engine has moments for a few seconds of juddering. It does not always do it and I cant say it does it when hot or cold. Now twice I have had an amber engine warning light come on for a few seconds and then go off! Its 3 months warranty so im not to concerned.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Craig

you should be - 3 months wont be enough.
You are either....
1) stupid
2) have more money than sense

As you have stated you dont take advice - why should we tell you to take it back, get your money back and get a TD4.

:dnfnoob:

ps hope yu have a thick skin.

Don't you think that's probably the reason the last owner got rid of it??

I would take it back under the warrenty.

As it is a later version of that engine then it may well be the ignition pack or the crank sensor playing up.

Either way if it has put the 'check engine' light on then it should have logged a fault that any OBD reader will report.

Not sure i willl be able to get my money back

I'd say they've sold you something not fit for purpose . I know the laws are different for vehicle sales, but I'd initially speak with the dealer, then Citizens Advice Bureau, then Trading Standards and maybe the local papers ... and let the dealers know (vaguely) your intentions.

Good luck !

Taking it down tomorrow. Going to give them the the opportunity to sort it out and make it clear that i will be taking to my garage for inspection. Apart from this problem i love the car.

Right, firstly don't be so laid back or you could be relieved of plenty of cash when this crappy warranty either runs out, doesn't stack up or is ignored. I seem to remember hearing from somewhere that you can return a car for any reason in the UK within 7 days if you're not happy, but I'm not entirely sure about this. Use the following link asap & find out where you stand. If you can return, then do so & buy the Td4 as Maddy says & don't let them delay you past the 7 days with the old "book it in & we'll take a look at it" dodge.
Then again, you'll probably ignore us all anyway so what's the point.

AFAIK (google will help of course) the law changed in relation to car sales, in that the owness is on the dealer to prove that the fault wasnt there when he sold the car and will stay that way for 6 months after the sale.

When I had problems the MAF on a 12k TD4(04 plate) the dealer fixed it cos the warrnty wouldnt and when talking to him he accepted that I could ask for a refund.

You may well be entitled to a refund, do some research.

Used that link. Seems your right i can have a refund. This is not going to be fun when i take it back!!!

Is the 1.8 petrol at only 18k miles such a bad thing?

Other than the usual Head Gasket Failure is there any other major problems that this engine is prone too?

I have a pal that has a very early 1.8 thats on 120K now and not had the HGF nor any other major trouble.

If the OP isnt doing huge mileages and got it for a good price then maybe he should just get this problem fixed by dealer and stick with it. He would have to understand the early symptoms of HGF and save money to the inevitable when he gets to 40k+

Just a thought

I know what you mean about not fun, but remember the law is on your side & they are the ones who have sold you this faulty car. If it makes you feel better, go to your citizens advice bureau & get the exact law references etc.
Your only mistake was to ignore advice from here, but you can still turn it around, they should have at least sold you a car which was trouble free.

Good luck & don't feel intimidated.

Surely where the law is concerned you must give the garage the opportunity to repair the vehicle in the first instance, otherwise there would be millions of vehicles being returned within the first week.
I have always found not just with vehicles that the seller expects to be given achance to remedy things prior to going any further.
Have you spoken to the garage and given them such a chance?

All seems a bit dramatic to me. Why not just get if fixed under the warranty and get on with it. You dont stand any chance of enjoying the thing at this rate of negative posting - which is a shame bcos they are really good fun. I would say that it is worth striking up a relationship with your local indie as everday workshops are prob not best for L/R's.:)

the law is on your side, you can get your money back if you feelthe vehicle is worthy of rejecting (in other words you are so unhappy with the faults you have found that you are unwilling to risk owning the vehicle longer term).. at the same time you must have ignored the advice for a reason... remmeber what that reason is and consider that if you want a petrol the best car to buy is one you know something about... so getting this one fixed up will make it the right car...

ignore 'warranty's' they are generally not worth the paper they are written on and usually try to convince you that you are entitled to less recourse than you actually are...

why am I still feeling happy... mine just overwhelmingly failed its MOT....

Im giving them the chance to sort the problem out. I like the car and its mint apart from this problem which they are going to sort out. I only do 5k a year.

I got really worried about what had been said on here. I know this engine can be a lemon, but i look after my cars and i think it worth a punt!
