Did a transfer gear box oil change a couple of days ago , latter I noticed oil coming from handbrake drum . I thought when I filled it it was taking a lot of oil but carried on until it started to come out.I now realize I filled it from the wrong hole. The right hole is a square half inch socket and I filled from the hex bolt a bit higher up on the end of transfer box .I know Iam a total knob head but have I fooked the transfer box oil seal or will it be ok if I just drain it to correct level ( if I can get the bastid filler plug to open!] :(

Managed to get the filler plug out and about two litres of gear oil pumped out  Ive been driving round with oil at that level for a year because I topped it up when I first got it thinking the oil was low.Didn,t notice any bad leaks until I decided to do an oil change before my trip down to Cornwall.Just been for a run out and there is still some oil at the bottom of drum but only slight drip on drive{about the size of a penny] Hopefully it will be ok .You know what they say" a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" :D

make sure yu clean out the drain hole from the rear of the transfer box. underneath the tail housing and immediately in front of the handbrake back plate is a small (3mm?) hole which is angled up and to the rear - this allows any oil which leaks from the back of the tbox to drain out before it gets to the handbrake.

Thanks for the tip.Ive just been under her but cant locate this 3mm hole. Are all the transfer boxes the same', mines a 300 auto.If I do find it is it just a matter of wiggling a piece of wire up it?

yup - i used a small lecky screwdriver - but a coathanger wire wud be the same.
ah - yu sed 300 auto - not sure on that - i know its the same on a series and 200tdi disco tbox.
