I know the PTO on the back of the transfer box can be used to power various things, could it be used in reverse and if i bolted an electric motor onto it could that be used to propel the vehicle using batteries?

Probally… it’s only the same as engaging an overdrive

You need to find out what power the pto can handle, doubt it is much.
 
Interesting idea. Presuming you're keeping the V8 and main box ?

Purely as a vapour build:

You'd need an overdrive type way of splitting the gear on main shaft that drives the intermediate shaft.

An old overdrive could be repurposed, with the syncro and layshaft ditched.

Tig a mounting plate to it, somehow, and an electric interlock.

Or, as an alternative, ditch the gear box, use an lt230, and power the electric motor from the 24V alternator. V8, electric motor, lt230.
 
surely high power/torque going the 'wrong way' would just make things explode?
everything in the transmission is designed from the ground up to transmit power in one direction, ie from the engine to the prop-shafts/PTO? taper bearings, endfloat etc would all be upside down?
 
Pto can handle 20/25bhp, the s2 manual says. I would guess they are all along the same lines?

Does it say 'B' hp? As in Brake. On a tractor the PTO is often rated in Shp (Shaft), which is something different to Bhp. I'm not sure how you could regulate power 'to' the PTO in any sort of accurate or even blinding guessing sense.
 
The PTO would need to drive a alternator/generator to charge the batteries to run the motor.
No expert but presume it would need a speed controller also.

I would guess it means it could drive something that takes between 20 and 25 hp to drive it maximum
If I remember correctly some of the land rovers you could get governors for them
