Has anyone swapped a 4.6 V8 auto box into a diesel doing the work themselves. The reason I ask is that I have a 1999 DHSE and I have acquired a 065 series HP24 box and intend to get it changed over for the HP22 that is currently in the car. I know there are people who have had the job done by the likes of Ashcrofts so we know it is possible.
If anyone has tackled this job, can you tell me any of the pitfalls and any special parts I will need to supply. modified Flexplate, xyz switch etc. Any info more than welcome

thought I heard/read somewhere that the length was different too and you'd need a different something else....whether that was the bell housing or the output end thingy I can't remember....also you *may* need a different length rear propshaft....research required.

Ant
That may be if you use the 061 box
Dave told me not to use that type and go for the 065 as it was a simple swap other than bell housing and TC?
Could always email Ashcroft and ask the question like I did to be sure ;)
Daves a helpfull enough bloke

Either version of the HP24 box will fit as the spacer from box to transfer box is altered to accomodate the length difference.
Use the Diesel bell housing and torque convertor, no need to touch the flex plate, ideally a new or recon torque convertor while it's all apart.
The only pitfall is the autobox oil pump, you may have to swap the pump from your HP22 to the HP24, not a big job. Make sure the torque convertor is held in place to the box when removing the box and the torque convertor should be located to the box oil pump and held in place when re-fitting or the drive lugs will get broken.

I'm not going to argue this point as I simply don't have the knowledge!
But I have been over this with Dave as I've said before and he has said not to use the 061 box?? As I say I don't have the knowledge to agree/dispute this But I am interested to know why a guy who's business is to build these as said dont use the 061?
If it was just a spacer I'm wondering why he just didn't say or just told me what I wanted to hear about the 065?
Not arguing as I respect your knowledge and opions! Just very interested to know exact difference in the 2 boxs

The exact difference between the 061 and the 065 or the HP22 is 15mm, if you check the spacer between the auto box and the transfer box you will find 2 different lengths, one is 15mm thicker than the other.
At least one person has fitted the early box sucessfully and I believe it's actually stronger as the 065 uses the same box casing as the HP22.

Thanks to Mark, Saint and Datatek for the answers,
Keith, you mention the oil pump my have to be swapped, would that be on a specific box series (061/065 etc), year or other criteria?
thanks
Bill

Sorry Bill, I don't know the answer to that one, it has only come up recently on one that was done, it has not been metioned by others that have done it. It's possible the pump was a modified on later versions. It's apparently not difficult to do the swap.

Thanks Keith, I will phone Dave Ashcroft in the morning and ask him.
I am thinking of buying a recon torque converter from him anyway.
I have an indy who will change the boxes over for £200 plus oils etc so not too bad. He has changed auto boxes before although not an HP24 into a diesel but he seems quite confident. He is quite busy (might be a good sign)so likely to be a few weeks before he can do it.

I wouldn't bother to ask Ashcrofts, they have a vested interest in selling re-con gearboxes, the info they give out about box swaps is not always accurate. They do a good re-con service though.

Never tried selling me anything when I spoke to him
just ask a simple question of do you need to do anything with the pump? Cant see why they would want to give false information to earn a bad reputation
I never thought to ask him that and he never said I needed to
Simple!

They were to say the least non commital when I asked, not to say discouraging. I did not say they would give false information, just that the information may not be correct, I should have added, for the job in hand, as they would not know exactly what version of the box pump you would have without reference to serial numbers etc.:)

Ive been looking to find out myself keith since yesterday as I have a 065 box in my possession and not got round to fitting it yet! Was waiting for my mate to have a free Saturday ad he has his garage
after this pump query I want to find out the facts myself as I want to drive in and drive out :)

Fair enough, apart from the bell housing and possibly the pump it's a straight swap. New oil and filter at the same time. Want to do mine, the difficulty is getting a box in France.
