Yes its february, but I am looking to do a custom A/C install on my TD5 defender to take the edge of the summer heat, as I will be doing some long trips this year, therefore looking for some inspiration.

I don't like the fact the factory option or kits seem to take up what little space is left in the passenger footwell and protrude into the car or the fact that kits now seem to be £3k, when a lot of the parts required are bolted to scrap discoveries.

Has anyone modified a TD5 heater box to accommodate the evaoprator? My other consideration was fabricating a custom duct between the wing, and heater box, incorperating the evaporator pre-fan and a proper pollen filter.

There will be plenty of other head scratching, but once the key hardware has been located other components can be considered.

Any thoughts or links to similar projects?

My factory fitted a.c dont intrude into the foot well And works well

Good suggesting about Ministry of Defender. Nice to see something well considered and engineered. Think whichever path I take there will be a need for some assitance for components and final commissioning.

As for a factory fitted option, my best option would be to sell the defender and buy an XS model as those kits seem to be about £3k!

This may have turned into a build thread.

I found a cheap heater to recondition for 30 quid, so thought I would investgate this properly.

After stipping it down, I think the best approach will be siting the evaporator in an airbox with a bulge/extension section where the air is either diverted round or through the heater. Before going any further a bit of research is needed to try to find a dimensionally suitable evaporator, then fabricate a suitable enclosure to house it.
