How to - Land Rover 90 TD to Discovery 200TDi Engine Conversion

As I said, I've got my donor Disco already :):D:D
You will prob find it easier to pull the disco engine and box out complete with wiring and ancilleries and clutch fluid feed pipe etc,.
Then you can send the downpipe kit back as you wont need it, you wont need to extend the oil cooler pipes, intercooler pipes etc as they will all fit.
Just fit the engine in place, fasten up the gearbox mounts (using 90 ones) and mark the chassis for welding the engine mounts a bit further forward, everythin else is a breeze, props fit and clutch pipe etc..
Just have to tilt the rad and intercooler back a bit.:)

Thanks for the tip - I've never actually seen any guides showing that method, nor even thought about it! If I can do it this way it would be ideal in fact... the gearbox in the 110 is alright but a bit crunchy every now and then. Do you reckon by any chance that you could write out a quick step-by-step guide on how to do this? I'm sure it would be helpful to loads of people, not just me! :eek::eek::D:D
 
ive seen it done but changing gear is a right mission as its like where a high/low selector sits in a defender:p

Yes they are in the wrong place and that is the only bit of bodging that is needed.
The high/low transfer box lever comes up in the same place as it was on the defender box but is now in front of the gearlever on the box instead of behind it.
The gearlever comes up right on the leading edge of the seat box and the box will have to be cut and shut. But, the gearlever is not in a bad place for shifting gears and can be much improved by welding a small extension piece to the disco lever to bring the shifter up and forward a bit. This makes for a light, silky gearchange and the gearknob isn't far away from where it was on the defender box.
I'll get some pics of Tom's at the weekend, his 90 has been transformed by fitting the disco box and t/b as well as the tdi engine.
The whole transplant was made easier by using the disco bits including leaving the disco engine loom in place, this meant that the alternator plug wasn't a problem either, just connected a couple of wires and she was away.
Saved a load af cash as well as the exhaust downpipe fitted and all the pipes and hoses, just had to pinch one power steering pipe from the disco and use the disco p/s fluid resevoir.:)

As many pics as poss then please as i have a disco gear and t box...was going to wait and get the defender box...but if its as easy (?) and good as you say.......

I'll try and get some 'through the window' pics tomorrow on the car park.
The only problems we encountered were moving the engine mounts forward on the chassis, altering the rad/intercooler mountings, customising the fuel piping to suit, modifying the exhaust where the downpipe meets the 90 system, fitting the 90 temp sender to the tdi, drilling two holes in the handbrake cable bracket, and a cut and shut job on the tunnel to accomodate the gearshift and blank the old gearlever hole.
I'll get some pics of Tom's air filter (Disco) setup as well.

Gonna do this on my 110 soon and will photograph the conversion problems and solutions as I go..

Don't think me or my mate are up to modifying the exhaust downpipe ourselves really... will probably just keep the kit and do it that way. The gearlever position doesn't look as bad as I thought it would though.

The disco downpipe fits without modification and there is plenty of room for it, the link pipe from there to the first box has to be altered as it fouls the gearbox mounts (simple job)
Another plus point is that a clutch change would be a doddle as the bell housing bolts are well forward of the bulkhead.

If you have the bits then go with what you have got, just saying that we were suprised at how it all fitted and spare hoses etc will be easy as they are just standard Disco parts.

hi everyone petes pics of my landy show how easy it was.. just had my first test drive went like a dream.. the gear lever is just right and was easy to use. going to fit a cb radio in front of the checker plate box to make it look better.. but all was ok with it..only problem i had was i got carried away on sound deadining matting from the disco i put in the footwell and could not get up to full speed till i cut a pice out of it...the accerater didnt go all the way down. :)
