How to hand paint a landy(with pictures)

I want yo repaint my defender which is windjammer blue do I need to use a certain type of paint eg gloss or satin many thanks

Originally designed as a coach paint for those who can't afford to spray.

I heat it up in a bucket of hot water and it contracts when applied.

Tekaloid coachpaint & varnish

I think it'll be on here.

Edit: bg18 u07 is the paint code for it, use the same colour undercoat and only paint thin layers.

did mine with satin black paint and it turned out really good. hand painting is the way to go!!

Paddocks none cell is a good paint to use for either spraying or hand painting, when i restored my last series truck ( swb van ) my bro blew it over in bronze green then later when i decided to go truck cab i hand painted it in deep bronze green ( slightly darker ) and the finish was as good as being spray painted and thinking of doing the same with my 90 at some point

Sorry to drag this thread up but I'm having a crap time trying to paint mine.

Was rollering on some ebay military vehicle paint in white gloss. Unthinned using harris foam gloss rollers. I was getting an unbelieveable amount of orange peel. After nearly destroying my arms flatting a panel back and getting a mediocre/good finish (and using 2.5lts on only 30% of the vehicle...quite alot of sanding) I sent back the 5lts I had ordered and decided to just whack on the 5lts of satin black that the previous owner included with the truck. It just wasn't worth the effort.

I did a tester patch in the back, however, this also has some orange peel. Albeit less.

Where am I going wrong, its about 5-10 degrees celcius, should I heat the paint beforehand? or thin it out about to stop it going on so thick?

I seem to actually be able to flat back this satin but the whole point was I didn't want to.....

No expert but sounds like it's way too thick.

I did a whole Series ambulance with 2.5l.

Much too cold to paint, wait until the weather warms up a bit.

Not much chance of that unfortunately, Can I just keep the paint warm before rollering it?

Sounds like it needs thinning, Ive started using synthetic thinner.

Really thin coats and multiple layers are sometimes required if its orange peeling everywhere, or alternatively get a compressor and spray light coats on much easier and a better finish.

is there an auto equivalent of shellac primer you can put on first to make sure the peel isn't a result of a reaction between the new paint and what is underneath?

Very impressed with your examples of hand painting,liked the S3 SWB. I'm swithering about whether to spray or paint and may now do the latter in the absence of spraying equipment. Looking to go classic bronze green, cream top and wheels. Currently faded masai red with marine blue underneath. Trouble is picking a dry weather window in our unpredictable climate.
