Hi, a bit embarrassed  to ask but for the sake of the LR I need to know how to drive semi-auto. I searched and couldn't find the manual.
I know it's kind of newbie stuff, but how do I drive semi-auto, mine has 4-2-1 in order but I am not sure from where to start, it is the 1 then going up right when I start ?
I use the D mode all the time, but when it's cold it doesn't change gears smoothly and it suggest that I should be using the semi-auto mode which I am not familiar with and I don't want to do something stupid and mess around with the gears.
Any advise would be appreciated.

With the lever in D, knock the lever to the right. This selects Sport mode. The lever can now be pushed forward to go up the gears and pull backwards to go down the gears. Whatever gear it's in is displayed on the dash.

is it better to use D mode or semi-auto

The numbered gears below D are for holding it in gear, for example when towing, or going up a big hill to stop the car automatically changing up and dropping out of the powerband.

As for which mode is better, depends on what you're doing, the car will still automatically change up in Sport mode if you don't do it, I don't see why the smoothness of the change would be different between fully auto or semi though

so if it doesn't change gears smoothly, especially when it's cold, then would that be down to a particular problem or does it mean that I have to use the semi-auto mode ?

My box is smooth as silk when hot. When cold, I do have a slight thump into 4th. This is most noticeable with a light throttle.

The Jatco auto box is fussy on fluid, it needs changing before the 60,000 change interval.

my autos box is the same when it is cold it takes its time in changing up, this is normal but if it does it for a prolonged period then either have you fluid checked as said should be changed every 60,000 or it could be low fluid or could be the seals

Hi

I use manual when it's cold as mine does not change up very early. Smooth enough but holds lower gears for too long in my opinion.

After a couple of miles all is ok

Don't know about freelanders. But some auto have a temp sensor for when temps a very low they do not shift up very quick giving thing a chance to warm up first. My Ford is a 5 speed auto unless below zeroF temps then it goes 1 gear lower( becomes a 6 speed) and limits speed to 15 mph until things warm up.

Not quite.

Using '4' will stop the gearbox selecting 5. (But can use 1, 2, 3 & 4)

Using '2' stops it using 3, 4 & 5. (But can use either 1 or 2)

Using '1' holds it in '1'.

This is how it should work , Holding the gear at higher rpm so it warms the gearbox & engine quicker .

Thats pretty much what I meant, won't let it change up above the gear

I use the sport mode quite often. I find it suits the power characteristics of the engine well. I use D if I'm plodding along with the traffic. Once I'm on the open road I select Sport and off it goes!! The KV6 comes alive above 4500 RPM :)
