Been looking at a local 2000 MY P38a 4.0 HSE it's mint with full sequencial LPG but going cheap as it's got a blown HG.

How integrated are the electronics to the engine?

Can they be bypassed?

How easy?

Has this been done before? Any links to freds or write ups?

What motor are you thinking of fitting? ;)

do the HGs over a weekend see how it runs. for a bit then decide if you want to swap the lump out for something 'interesting'.. like a tweaked 5.4

That i assure you has never been done before!

'Tis a proper engine though, that toyota unit is probably the best engine ever made, in terms of longevity :D

See lad, now you get's my line of thinking ;)

Just bookmarked a half dozen freds across as many forums about the engine and the severing of body from engine, gonna be a lot of reading

I did toy with the idea of fitting a BMW 4.4 lump into a p38 at one point, my rationale being that it would physically fit.
My route would be to keep the original p38 electrics and make the p38 sensors/injectors etc fit the BMW lump.
That way, there's no electrics to worry about, only mechanical issues.
Obviously, the vanos wouldn't work but that could be locked off at a suitable position.
Sadly, I don't have the time to tackle it, probably keep the p38 under wraps for now and do it when I retire!

There's a vid on the tube of the Lexus V8 in an RRC ... Mmm ... it was rather nice .. quiet as a mouse and faster than a scalded cat ;)

( see what I did there :D:rolleyes: )

Well if you do it then I might get rid of the engine for you. I've been thinking of getting a v8 and refurbing it and putting LPG on as a backup for when the government finally declares my oil burner illegal.

More than one person has fitted the M57 diesel to the P38 and the straight six BMW petrol engine should also be an easy transplant.

I wish I could find out how they did it as it could well be a nice swap to do and think it would really make the p38 how a diesel RR should have been,
but then it would have been better than the petrol and that wouldn't have let that happen:rolleyes:

If the old diesel engine ECU is left in place, the new M57 unit is fitted along with it's own ECU plus an HP24 gearbox then there are some electrical connections to sort out. It needs the radiator from the early GEMS V8 petrol with top entry/bottom exit rather the both entry and exit at the top.
If you had ever owned a Daihatsu Fourtrack or a Pajero auto, you would realise that the M51 is quite quick by comparison and if chipped is on a par with the V8.
Not easy to get a transplant approved for road use here.
