Morning all,

Just a quick question.

Could anyone tell me how much oil (how many litres)I need to buy to carry out an oil change on my 2003 Discovery 2 td5 ES premium.

Many thanks

Mark

Hi
Just a few more quick questions.
Wot oil?
Transmision Oil?
Engine Oil?
Steering Oil?
Brake Oil?
All of the above?
It should be in your handbook.

Engine oil is about 5.? call it 6 litres... if I remember correctly...

If your buying it in gallon containers you will need 2 anyway...

Good question.

Engine oil. My car is going for the full monty tune up at td5alive and I have been recommended to have a service done and use castrol edge 5w/40 fully synthetic oil - damn it's expensive. £45 for 4 litres.

Might go for the Shell helix 5w/40 fully synthetic and save some pennies.

Any experience on oil types ?

The landrover handbook says 9.5 litres of oil in total but you need 7 for the engine and 1 for the filter, so 8 litres should do you.

It helps if you know what question you are answering. It also helps if you answer the Q, rather than just have a dig, as usual.

I wouldn't waste my money on that oil, £20 for 20litres of oil at Costco at the moment. Its a good oil.

All this £10 a litre or more stuff for oil is a joke and the oil companies are laughing all the way to the bank.

Are you CRAZY?
I use Ovoline Tractor Universal oil in my TD5, at about £1 a litre!
Changed every 6-8,000 miles whether it needs it or not.

TOP GRADE OIL!

Check Brett Oil Company listing through Google etc..

And yeah yeah, the grade numbers aren't quite what LR ask for. SO ????
Before you shout about that, first make sure you understand SAE numbers.

TUOils are the VERY BEST there is so farmers can fling it into every empty oily hole and still not end up making warranty claims!

Do Brett Oil supply the public then? what are TUOils ?

Thanks for your help.

I agree, I do all my own servicing on my Disco 2 TD5 - LR stealers are SUCH a FECKIN rip OFF . . .

My LR Dealer wanted £99 + vat just to change the eng oil and filters, I did it myself in well under an hour, I used a Comma oil that met ALL the APi and SAE requirements specified by LR, bought from a motor factors for £13 per 5 litres, got the filters from Paddock's, job done for less than £30.

The likes of Castrol, Shell etc are no doubt good oils, but it's the same mentality as not buying Tesco or Asda cornflakes cos Kellogs are better !!!

If anyone wants to pay well over £40 for 5 litres of Castrol/Shell ??? - carry on, there's one born every minute as they say ?

I know I could do it for even less using Tractor oil ?? but prefer to stick to an oil that meets (or exceeds) the LR spec !!

I am gobsmacked that LR would (if I was stupid enough to let them) charge a WHOPPING £475 for a so called full service, when the main service consists of engine and gear box oil change, a load of easy checks, and squirt a bit of spray grease here and there !!!

I appreciate that not all can do home mechanics, but I would suggest - get yourself done the local college evening classes and do a course, you'll save a fortune !!!!

Anyone who dont know where to start when it comes to changing oil dont deserve to own a landy!

Unless of course you're a woman with fingernails - in which case park it up darling at the Chelsea Tractor LR repair center, send your husband the bill and go shopping in Notting Hill: YouTube - Harry And Paul - I Saw You Coming - Rasta's Chair
