Hiya, just a bit of a query - I have a 2003 discovery, its been in the garage today to have the back brake pads and discs done. The mechanic has told me that it took 3 and a half hours? I think that this seems an excessive amount of time to do the discs and pads but he said that you have to take all the drive shafts off and then have to reset all the computer because all the dashboard lights come on when you do the brakes. I'm not remotely mechanically minded, however I have only just had the same done on my other car at another garge and it took less than an hour. Is it really that big a job on a Landrover discovery?

I,d say you,ve been done there.

After the wheel is off, its 2 bolts to get the pad carrier off, then 2 to take the caliper off. After the disc retaining screw has been removed, the disc will come off.

2 hours would have been MORE than enough.

depends on any siezed bolts and slides on caliper ,but you dont heed to remove any drive shafts or reset ecu /dash ,so 3 hrs is feasible but he was not telling you the truth

I agree JM, that 3 hours could be taken to do this job, but then the reason for the increase time would have been, " Sorry madame but all the bolts on the caliper were seized as was the disc retaining screw ", not some load of bull !.

They,re being a little dishonest I think.

discs and pads can be bought for £50 and its not a massively difficult job, get yourself on a car maintenance course!!!!

Well worth doing the easier jobs yourself!

Why worry about the time it takes or is it the bill you had to pay? You should have gone for a fixed price on labour plus materials and vat, any decent garage will be able do that and will also advise on any parts found that may be require replacing now or in the near future plus cost for u to make up you own mind.

What a load of old bolony !!!!!!!!

If a garage mechanic with the correct tools and a lift can't do rear discs and pads in 1hr then he wants shooting !!!!!!

1. Jack up the rear end of the car using your preferred method;

2. Undo one only, caliper retaining bolt and swing it away;

3. Undo the philips? head disc retaining screw, if this is difficult, use an impact driver to remove. Then remove disc and replace with new one, fit new retaining screw if necessary.

3. Push back the caliper pistons until they are flush with the caliper - you may need to use a G-cramp or bespoke tool for this. Install new pads, swing calliper back in position, use provided new bolt.

Now do the other side.

You may notice an absence of drive shaft removal, computer bull****.

It makes me so angry when cocks like this garage guy takes advantage of an innocent :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

:5biagree:

Changed ALL my discs and pads as soon as I got my 2002 Discovery, and at no point did I have to remove any driveshafts or reset any computers. I would complain to the garage.

Agreed

Typical time charged for that type of brake system, which is about as common as you get on any vehicle is an hour and a half! And that's a very generous time allowing the tech to make good bonus! You can easily do them in 45 mins or less if you get your finger out.
I'm a self employed mechanic. I think they've had your pants down personally....
Suspect they're trying to tell you a D2 is as complicated as a D1 to do! It isn't, they're dead simple
Go complain and get some cash back and don't ever go near them again!

Forgot to say, as mentioned above, they're lying, no computers to reset, no shafts to remove, no bearings to undo!
They give honest mechanics a bad name. If you're curious I own a Disco 2 Commercial. It's my work van and I rely on it and yes I have done discs and pads front and rear on axle stands in less than two hours!!!
