How do I check the IRD?

The wife bought a Freelander 1, Kalahari, Td4 auto by auction, very cheaply. When I got to have a decent look at it the propshaft and VCU are missing.... Dunno what I thought I'd seen when looking in the auction yard but it wasn't a drive train :(

Well, it looks like I've managed to source a propshaft and VCU via eBay, I'll be getting the VCU reconditioned when it gets here, my concern is that the IRD might be banjaxed as well, is there anyway I can find out without a propshaft and VCU in place?

I don't fancy lifting the thing into place just to take it back off again if I can avoid it.

The car drives OK, no noises from what's left of the drive train, it is happy going forwards and backwards, no issues on full lock in either direction.

So, is there a 'lazy way' to check the IRD please?

Not really. Best visual checks are usually draining the fluid and looking for metal contamination. Another more difficult way is to inspect the crown wheel by removing the prop and back plate, then looking in with an inspection light. If done on a 4 poster, you can move the vehicle backwards and forwards so the wheel rotates and you can check all the teeth are in place.

Could that be done if it was up on axle stands?

Shining a light through a hole sounds about my laziness level :) After all, the prop is alrerady off!

A full fluid change is on the agenda for the next few weeks, once it, hopefully, warms up and dries out a bit.

Hi there TRXnme,
Did you ever sort this out? Please update us as I might have to do the same with mine.
Many Thanks
Rob :)

He's not posted for over 2 years so I think you won't get an answer

1st post should be an introduction :mil18:
