Heya :)

Well I'm sure this won't be the first or last thread along these lines but ....

I'm looking at getting myself a new toy and all boys love tonka trucks! Figuring on a budget of around 2 to 3 grand for the 'truck' and around one or two grand for fixing stuff and buying bolt-ons which I'll likely want to do from day one since I have very little patience when it comes to toys :D

It's role : daily truck predominantly for short journeys (hence not being overly fussed about diesel or petrol), occasional weekend toy for some 'light' off-roading / green laning, bus to get me to suitable nature areas in order to rekindle my photography love and longer term, an occasional tow vehicle to get mine or friends other 'toys' (cars) to motorsport tracks.

I have a unit next to a metal working facility so making suitable 'armour' etc is do-able and I have sufficient tooling and equipment to maintain the vehicle myself for the most part so I'm thinking the basics shouldn't be to expensive in relative terms. The acid question really is, what to buy?!

I'm thinking a 2000ish reg disco of some sort or, around the same year p38 since I like the looks on both of them. Do love the sound of the v8's in the p38's (and things like dealing with the electrics to allow them to go wading aren't a worry) but there do seem to be more off the shelf toys for the discos. I am leaning more towards the disco in general terms and, if the diesels are decent off road then I could be swayed since it would make drives to the lake district etc a bit friendlier on the wallet which by definition means more toys can be bought :biggrin1:

td5 disco is mighty fine vehicle
 
2/3 grand 2000,petrol maybe .It's called a landy 90 110 and all the other names under the sun , but not a truck, vanny at most if no windows

Anyways. £3k will buy you a nice TD5V8 Disco 2 or an alright Defender 90 200tdi

A P38 will also be in your budget too, but out of the three mentioned I'd go for a Disco2.

You don't need to go too mad on mods. Decent mud tyres and a full service will be enough to get you going :)

A google search will produce buyers guides on all three.

Post up a pic when you have bought a 'truck' ;)
 
Depends on how you define "research" really ;) - I've read a number of owner reviews on both the td5 and the p38/p38a across various sites and watched a ton of youtube vids of both but there seems to be a bit of 'one camp or the other' with them - a lot of them seem to be either landy or rangie pro and then there's the petrol vs diesel argument too! That and of course, judging their off-road abilities is often directly related to mods and driver ability (certainly on youtube at least) which I don't have a huge knowledge of either category since my interests to now have always been related to performance / track cars which obviously don't tend to go into terrain a 4x4 would go into unless something has gone very wrong :crazy_driver:

I'm fairly convinced that any of the options would actually be perfectly adequate for my demands based on what I've read to be honest but this forum seemed to be relatively neutral in terms of the 'camps' so I just thought I'd see what others thought - especially since it seems that some of the members on here had owned both over time :)
 
scooby i prefer the look of the rr but bought the td5 i needed 7 seats and all the people carriers were (can't say not in anything goes).Mate the disco td5 is a top bit of kit yeah a few niggles but mine has never locked me out, left me stranded like a p38.As a daily hack can't fault it.It's not perfect by any means it's an es model with all the toys including the built in shower.but as long as you give her love she gives it back.Off road even in standard trim did well on the plains.The only thing that winds me up is parking the bloody beast on a day out.Multi stories are a no go and some car parks due to height restrictions.

show me an alright 200tdi defender for 3k, i tried and looked at a few in that range, all complete sheds, even still i search out reasonable distance/local ish defenders and nothing ever ok looking

but to the op....i own a p38 and previously had a 97 300 tdi disco...out of the 2 it boils down to this...

disco was more reliable in things going wrong, that was an auto diesel, but i find the manual diesel p38 diesel to be much much nicer on the road, to drive , yet its not as "truck like" off road or for lugging stuff about , the p38 is more refined and nicer- great feeling to drive on the road and in winter with the odd track or very light off road/verges,fields,grass,yards etc..shes lovely

but disco more work like

so weigh up what your specific needs are, i didnt really do enough off roading or work/farmy type use to really need a disco, mostly just on road with a bit of off road or the 4x4 winter use , so a p38 suited myself better, but if you want to off road a bit or loading up and work/work horse use..avoid and get a disco
 
Thanks for that guys - must admit, one thing I hadn't considered was the practicalities of something like parking the disco! That must be a total pain in the *#*#* !!! Saying that, I'm thinking back a good few years now when I used to swipe my dads classic vogue for the odd day here and there - even that was a squeeze height-wise with some carparks ... I'm guessing the gen3 airbag upgrade and a rugged set of tyres would create similar car park entry woes for the p38! The simple solution with the classic was to drive past the carpark entrance and find a suitable gap in the fencing/bollards then hop over the curb in to the carpark but I guess the almighty parking police take a dim view on that these days since it seems to be an offense in its own right to even own a 4x4 ;)
