After picking up the Freelander. I don't have a clue how the hill decent work's. Could somebody explain how to use it and how it work's.
Sorry i never got any manual's with the car.
I'm right in thinking this is not a 4x4.
As you can read I'm an amateur.

Hi Shan, my hdc works when I press the button and put the car into gear 1 on my auto gearbox. When going down a hill or rough surface the tc and brakes kick in to get me down safely and at a moderate pace.

WOT!!!!!NOT A 4X4 . . . . .THIS IS WUN ER THE BEST 4X4'S AROUND in its class,,,,,,,drive it hard orft road un see, the traction control is fer nubees, un it slowws yer down un pooter takes over, i never use the stupid fing ,why ? cos eyes . . .MING THE MERTHILESS!!!!!:) ;)

i agree with ming, its the best in its class.. but then i don't think there are that many 4x4's fer hairdressers so the compertitshun is limited

What year? Auto or Manual?

Freelanders are permanent 4x4, but the amount of drive to the rear varies with conditions. On a hard dry road the majority of the torque goes to the front wheels, even the Land Rover engineers don't seem to be able to agree about how much, I've heard from less than 1% to 30%, I suspect it is nearer the former, but depends whether you have the early or late IRD, but is slippery conditions it will be 50/50 front & rear.
The HDC does not effect the distribution of power, so it will not help you climb a slippery hill. Still a good idea to select it, it will help if you fail to get up, and have to reverse back down.

Well i'm VERY SORRY guy's to say is it a 4X4 or not. I dont know. It's only for the wife to run about it.

The last last Landrover i was in was about 25 years ago when my Dad used to take us down the Beach in one. He used to be in the RNLI and we would run around the beach in it when he was out. LOL
I remember haveing the extra "gear stick" to put it into 4X4.

Well i'm sure i'll be giving this freelander a go off road then now i know it won't get stuck. It being a permanant 4X4.;)

Davec ::::::It's a 98 1.8. Manual. Sorry.

SORRY again guy's but i'm very new to the 4X4 and landrover scene.

in a nutshell, HDC lets you come down a hill forwards or backwards, with feet off the pedals, allowing you to concentrate on the steering. It only works in first or reverse. The ecu monitors the speed of each of the wheels individually and then controls the braking to that wheel accordingly. If it detects no speed then the wheel is slipping so it eases the brake off until it regains traction. To get the best idea of what it does, find a multi storey car park, go to the top of the slope, select first, turn on HDC and take your feet off the pedals. You will find hopefully your freelander will crawl slowly to the bottom, and if you have the radio off, you should here the various brake cylinders pinging as the ecu turns them on and off.

Of course, it it's not working properly, you run the risk of rolling down the slope and crashing into whatever is in the way, so maybe keep your foot by the brake just in case.
