Hi all

I've got a 300 d1 98MY

My power steering is intermittently poo. Tyres not flat, joints in good condition, swivel bearings OK, column OK etc...basically I'm thinking it's the pump

My question, obviously, is is there a high pressure pump to be had?

Thanks

Towsey

no and wouldnt be a good idea in any case

Well I did wonder about that aswell, just thought an extra 10-20% would be nice to overcome the tyres and rtc damper spring if I fit it etc

If it’s intermittently crappy then there is likely a fault, either in the box or the pump itself. The standard pump and box are more than man enough.

What are you symptoms?

Yeah I know they're OK when rite but just thought it would add a bit of ease of driving for the missus mainly but me aswell

Just generally heavier sometimes, not notchy or anything just heavy, but no all the time

Racers sometimes use 'em when they swap to hydraulic steering, but bore the outlet out by 0.5mm .. apparently it's more than enough! However, that's moving a single double acting piston, via an orbital I believe, coupled directly to the steering arm on the hub, NOT via a Landrover steering box and multiple rods and connections.

Only passing info on, if you do it, it's your wallet .. ;)

Haha cheers and yeah that's about it...but no I'm really not that worried just thinking my pump might be on its way out and if there had been a direct replacement upgrade I might have jumped on board

Have you changed the drive belt recently? When mine gets wet the power steering goes heavy while the belt slips for a second or two.......

A new (standard) power steering pump transformed mine. I hadn't realised that things had been getting progressively heavier. Then one day on a trip to Derby it became almost impossible to turn and I got a new one. It was so light by comparison. That's with 265x75 tyres and an RTC damper too.

Yeah belt is ok thanks, well it squeals when cold etc like normal but it drive pump ok.

Yeah well I've got 285 km's and have thought it will get an rtc damper if needs be. It's ok to drive, it's jumpstart not wot it was

One thing it does do is when turning fairly well into lock at low revs it does that sort of split second groan I've felt a few of them do and while having its split second groan the steering goes even stiffer but I don't know if it's pump or box?

Thanks

Towsey
