HID Kit on TD5 Facelift Legal?

"All new cars will have to be fitted with washers and leveling from the factory" Not all, high performance cars with low and hard suspension are exempt from a leveling system.

Also... "in order to pass the MOT test, vehicles fitted with after-market HID systems would also need to be fitted with headlamp cleaning and self-levelling systems".

Actually swapping the bulb for MOT purposes are dead simple. the kits are plug and play and literally you plug the black plastic three pronged clip into the original loom and errr thats it! And the best thing is the pack sits below the plastic trap on the slam panel so ideal for off roading. You can even get thin discharge packs making it even more slicker and then cable tie everything. It looks factory when you open the bonnet but makes the world of difference!

It is also worthy of note that a few high performance vehicles fitted with HID headlamps that
have barely any luggage space and stiff suspension do not require a self-levelling system.

So as my 110 has rock hard suspension it would pass then?

This does..

Dazzle can also be caused if the lamps are dirty or aimed too high due to, for example, carrying rear seat passengers and/or heavy items in the boot. Vehicles with HID headlamps are therefore required to have a headlamp washing system (a wiper is not required) and be self levelling, which may be achieved either by the use of either headlamp or suspension levelling systems.
The presence and operation of these headlamp cleaning and levelling devices has been added to the test. Therefore, if a mandatory headlamp levelling or cleaning device is missing, inoperative or otherwise obviously defective, the vehicle will fail.
This raises the question of whether these checks apply to vehicles fitted with after-market HID lighting kits. These kits convert conventional halogen headlamps to HID Xenon and they are widely sold and fitted to vehicles used on the road. The Department for Transport considers that after-market systems should be required to meet the same safety standards as that applied in respect of these lamps at vehicle Type Approval. Therefore, in order to pass the MOT test, vehicles fitted with after-market HID systems would also need to be fitted with headlamp cleaning and self-levelling systems. Some high specification estate cars are fitted with a self-levelling suspension system and this would be considered as adequate for the purpose.

The change was brought to light after the new rules were brought into place, the wording on the mot comp1 is different but i will make a simple call tomorrow and confirm this. As i have said all MOT centers have been told that if the conversion has been done already and there are now leveling/ washer systems it is a pass with advise. This wasnt one guy who popped in the garage but the MOT seminar. I know the books we got at the time didnt include it but its why they went over it so many times after as no one was sure.

As i said i shall call and confirm it all tomorrow, that link wouldn't be the first piece of wrong goverment information on the web.

I will add all cars built after 2012 will have to have it all wether its aftermarket or not

I suppose if ya own a Souped up V8 RR and spend a lot of time on the German Autobahn. it'd be worth doing it. But in a diesel motor on british roads if your lights aren't adequate you need Glasses not HID kits.. I mean it's not like you're gonna be driving so fast that you cant make out whats coming towards you??

Unless they're just for the Bling Bling factor??
 
Guys as some have said, as long as you have washers and levelling control on your lights its fine. I have HID's fitted to my 2003 D2 and passed other week no problems at all, the difference they make when driving at night is unreal and I will never go back to using standard lights again, infact i was so impress i had them fitted to the high beam too which when used lights dark lanes up like its daytime lol.

Bought mine from a guy opposite Armley nick in Leeds £120 fitted but you can buy the kits for around £65 if you want to get your hands dirty. fitted them on the Mrs Mk3 golf cabriolet really makes a big diff to night driving.

Self levelling has to be AUTOMATIC and if you'd read the thread. you'd have noticed that the NEW mot rules start this year.

I'll be honest I fooking hate C**ts with overly bright lights. they really **** me off when they blind me and ruin my night vision. with their blingy fooking bulbs.. C**ts the lot of them..

I have checked on the MOT computer this morning and it is definitely a case of if a conversion is fitted then it is a pass and advise, wether this is being communicated to the general public like this I dont know however ALL mot centers ahve been advised that any conversions without the level/wash system is a pass and advise, not a fail.

I can not give a reason why thier site is saying what it is, that is the EU directive but not how its beiong tested in the UK. Personally I would belive the MOT computers and not the DFT site. I know some people are going to say im wrong but this isnt my personal opinion, its what VOSA has told all VTS's

Interesting thread this! I both love and hate HID systems and not just love the ones on my E39 and hate them on chavbacks... although that mostly clears it up. I dislike seeing HID aftermarket kits on glass lense focused lights as the whole bloody thing lights up blue and screams aftermarket bling and blinds me coming the other way. Having said that I have retrofitted a system to my E39 5 series but it was designed to include HID as an option, (I purchased the correct lights) it has high power headlight washers and also has self levelling suspension so I'm reasonably sure I'm not blinding anyone. Judging by the aforementioned rules, I should also be able to retrofit them to my Mazda MX-5 provided I can find a headlight washer system and the correct projectorlamp focusing headlights.
I'd say that properly installed on a vehicle adequately equipped to take them HID systems do make a big difference to nighttime visibility. Improperly fitted to a vehicle not designed or modifyable to take them they look worse than a bumF****ed badger and blind oncoming users and the driver.

Here Here :D I had some dumbfook blingtwot in an audi (audi 80 I thnk) He was on my bumper. & aal I could see was two huge blue/white blooms from his lights. Looked like he was shining his headlamps thru his bairns kalaidoscopes.

No can do, the MOT system is a self contained system and not an online web app, I have printed the page from the online guide and taken a pic, thats the best I can do.

The wording is:

'Vehicles equiped with high intensity discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self leveling system.

Where such systems are fitted they must work'

This is how it was explained to us and its clear to see that its only if fitted they must work, if they are not fitted it is a pass and advise!!
