Got myself a Defender TD5 110 SW last november. Love it! Checked the oil level and dipstick came out dry, so added just over half a litre of oil then rechecked..dipstick now reads 4 inches over the full mark, so took out more than half a litre, dipstick still reading 3 inches above full mark...any ideas please.
 
It's as level as i can get it..which is pretty level. Adding oil through top (lifting little trap door and removing cap) from an oil bottle
 
So I'm now concerned that it has less oil in than when I started!! Will it be ok to drive it to the local garage?

I assume you are leaving the engine at standstill for a while before checking the oil on the dipstick, so that the oil has a chance to run back into the sump?

The engine takes over 7 litres of oil so if oil level is visible on the dipstick you are going to be in that region. If you've just got the vehicle, it might be an idea to get a good service done, new oil and filters, just for your own reassurance

At the moment it's reading about 3 inches over the full mark...I'm going to have a service done yes, thanks

I think you might find that it is just oil smearing up the dipstick from the side of the dipstick tube.
Try switching off, removing the dipstick, leaving for a half hour, and then re-checking, examine the dipstick carefully to see where the actual level is, ignoring smears of oil up the stick.
As Jim says, Td5 are tricky for oil checks. But @NorfolkBird manages fine on hers. Bit of an acquired technique compared to some cars, that is all.

Thanks I'll try that, and hopefully I will acquire the right technique!! Putting the kettle on :)

We specialise in the stupid answers so kindly stick to stupid questions for the time being :p

As said you need to look both sides of the stick to be able to see the actual oil level horizontally all around the stick.

New oil goes black in moments inside an oil burner so I wouldn't worry about that.
 
So yesterday, still being not sure how much oil was in my engine, I drove to town about 15 miles. Got to tesco and noticed oil pouring out of the engine....sh*t!! Drove to the nearest garage where they discovered that the plug on the rocker cover? had blown...How much trouble am I in? :(
