hi help need please

i recent bought and auto discovery diesel and have had some problems with automatic box and starter. i took engine out of it yesterday and the drive plate is mashed. so do i just replace the drive plate or do i replace the drive plate and flywheel.

i went to landrover and the guy in the parts dep said that there is shims as well but when i took the torque off there was wasnt shims there

any help most gratefull

but what the shims for

looking at the fiche and looking at your picture i cant make out what the shims do but i would put them in on rebuild if i were you. what sort of condition is the flywheel in

the fly wheel looks fine but its recomended to replace its as well

so you not seen this shims thing before then..

to be honest, ive never took an autobox out of a landy so the simple answer is no. but it must be there for a reason. perhaps this is what caused your problem

its just that there are five different size off shim and i dont know what shim i would need to put in so that why i jion here..... i just type in landrover forum in goolge and here i am a newbie.....

so will there be some one on here withs answers am glad youve try'd to dig me out

have you ever seen this before...........is a manual gearbox better then an auto

Which autobox is it? I've a rangey classic workshop manual that has details of the older [mid 90's] zf auto. In industry we use fluid drives which is the same as an auto box but only has 1 gear - the distance between the driven & driving parts of this is critical otherwise the things always drive. I would expect that the shims are to set the distance in the auto box and the thickness of them will be determined by measuring other clearances.

so how do i know what the clearance is i have no way of measuring it

Now I AM NOT taking the ****....but I would ask one of the guys who runs a landy parts business on here, and there a re a few if you look and my guess is that they will tell you whats what, But i wouldn t take my auto box out.... but then i am useless with anything bigger than a socket set and screwdriver

ive not done a disco autobox, but ive done plenty of gm/bw boxes. did one rangie box many moons ago.
think the shims are to get the correct clearance between the plate and the converter or the box. im not sure how you measure it though.

My rangey manual details the v8 - so dimensions may be wrong. But the principal of the shim is......
'to prevent distortion to flexible drive plate when bolted to the torque convertor'
for a v8 the measure is from.....
'the front face of the of the ring gear driveplate and engine cylinder block to gearbox mating face should be 8.08 to 8.20 mm'

So from your assembly diagram that will be the gap between item No.10 & the leading face of item No.1 Try assembling the parts to the engine without fully tightening and measure this gap. Item No.1 may be a convertor plate from V8 to tDi so that existing transmision parts could be used. I'd then go back to the Landrover spares guy and ask to talk to the mechanic to get the correct dimension from him. If they won't let you ask them if you can return the parts as your going elsewhere - after all they make more profits on the spares as well as on the labour!
