hi all, new to here, been scouring the internet for help with my freelander td4 and the awful noises its making!
Started off as a small whine from the rear drivers side after about 30mph.
Thought probably the rear wheel bearing.
It's now making the most horrendous whining and grinding noise, cabin noise is unbelievable.
Could it still be the wheel bearing but comletely shot now?
Also I reversed on tight left lock and heard an almighty crack!! getting worried something serious is wrong. apart from that it drives lovely lol

1) front if not all diff mounts - check soon - coz it can wear its way thro yo fuel tank.
2) cracked chassis or subframe attachment bolt (or both).

If I were you I'd stop driving it before you find your wheel parting company with your Gaylander!!!! It sounds like the bearing's completely shot and sometime soon you may well find it overtaking you, which would not be fun or pleasant!!

:welcome2: to the asylum, please collect your flak-jacket and tin hat from reception and get that bloody bearing sorted before your mates are buying your flowers!!!

have stopped driving it now :)

diff mounts? cracked chasis - dont like the sound of that !!!

being looked at later today, got a new rear wheel bearing hoping its that - had wheel bearings go on other cars before but none that made this noise so quickly!
mind you drove to scotland last week in it covered 1500 miles and thought it was the roof box whistlng at first so prob been gone a while!

Hi and welcome. Here's hoping it's not the IRD unit.

thanks for replies :)
whats the ird unit? how can i tell? 3 grander!?!?!? bloody hell that'l be my car gone!!

gaylanders have a little doughnut on the drive shaft to the rear....IRD and these are so infamous are breaking down that il bet their even on obamas'to do list'whilst hes putting all the worlds troubles to rights.......but even he cant sort the freelanders IRD troubles.....but a wheel bearing and an IRD are two different animals

made me laugh :do you now what the classic symptoms of the ird unit failing? does it sound the same as the wheel bearing?

thank you :) now i'm worried !!! just read the info about the chaps ird unit, he noticed a loud crack on full lock reverse too!!! ****e - only had the car 3 months!

thats why i said a wheel bearing and an IRD are two different animals.....and from what you wrote then it sounded to me like an IRD.....sadly its a common fault(design fault?) that most seem to suffer from(that and over heating/head gasket) but at least you now know what your looking at before you go having wheel bearings changed at £££ for no reason

already bought the rear wheel bearing and hub nut, cost me £40 and friend is replacing it for me on monday.
only heard the loud crack twice but its definately there!! looking at prices of ird gona cost more than the car is worth! duno what to do now apart from cry :((

crying isnt actually a recognised fix on the freelander.....kicking/jumping up and down whilst swearing have also been tried but also found to be ineffective.....therefore your back to that well known fix of'throwing ££££££££££ at it'....this often seems to work in the short term....i feel for you matey but alas at least you now have a rough idea of whats involved, sorry to burst your £40 wheel bearing theory

doing the swearing and jumping up and down bit now - your right it isnt working lol
stupid poxy cars, should have stuck with my focus!!! still gona have the wheel bearing done, paid for it now and its being done for free so im gona bury my head in the sand til monday and see if that helps. anyone want a 2001 td4????
