Just signed up toady after buying a 1.8 the other day - if i had done things the other way around have done not sure i would be here!

Anyways - the car has had a replacement HG some 30k ago and i would like to know if it was replaced with the improved HG (Goetze MLS?) or the original rover part. It was done by a local 4x4 specialist (not LR) and doubt they will have records dating back to 2004. The part number on the invoice is LVB000320L.

Any help appreciated.

fair play to you darth. welcome to the forum, and 10/10 for posting the too (even though it was your own).

far too many members post a problem, get loads of suggestions and then never come back and tell us what was wrong.

once again welcome, and hope you have a thick skin, things can be a little rough some times for freelander owners on here, esp. those that own 1.8 petrol versions. As If we haven't got enough to worry about owning a freelander.....

Cheers! Yeah, I'm getting the thick skin part already :blah:

After the beatdown i just took on my intro post and some further googling i decided to play it safe and upgrage my AA cover to breakdown repairs too. An extra £22.50 added to the cost of the car but got for a steal and covers 5 x £500 breakdown repairs should i ever need them (new HG? Transfer box? Gearbox?) and tows to my friendly garage so worth it for a liitle bit piece of mind i guess! :)

that's the Payen MkIII/Lotus gasket not the MLS type.

They just have more of the red elastomeric compound, hate to say it but they fail too :(
MLS is the way to go, people tend not to check the liner heights, so no matter what gasket is fitted the engine is beyond redemption.

K4 1.8's make good wine bottle holders, KV6 even more bottles ;)

Unfortunately the MLS gasket also fails. An HGF fix can also be a lot more than £500 too. As NI says, often warranties dont cover checking liner heights, checking heads for flatness or having them skimmed.

I am aware that the MLS gasket isn't a get out of jail free card but only perhaps a slightly better fix. I am also aware that a HG failure is likely to end in a bill over £500, especially as when it happens i will want to have more than a straight swap done but it will at least it should go a good way to helping with the costs. I swear to god, some of you people are really starting to bum me out! :(

Ere - a bit touchy arent we. I was just pointing out, in case you dudnt know it, that the MLS gasket aint, as yu put it the magic bullet. Also we have had peeps on here conplaining that when they have had HGF, the warranty covered hardly any of the repair costs- so i was giving yu the opportinity and the suggestion that you mite like to check exactly wot yo warranty covers. Some arent worth the paper they are written on.
Now stick yo dummy back in - just coz yu bought a, prospectively, crap vehicle - dont take it out on us. We hope you are one of the lucky ones and, if you can get a tougher skin and ignore the "burn it" comments, there is a lot of help and advice on here. There aee also a lot of peeps that have had Hippoos and been burnt badly, so dont blame the messengers.

I dont mean to come across as touchy, just feel that it seems like 95% of people that have replied to my first 2 threads have been incredibly negative. I realise that there are inherent problems with this model and i may be looking to spend time and money on it at some point in the future. Thanks for the tip on the warranty. I checked before taking it out that HGF was covered, which it is. Hopefully, as you say i will turn out to be one of the lucky owners who ends up having relatively few troubles. Certainly going by the general condition of the car and the meticulous nature it seems to have been looked after prior to my ownership, I stand a half decent chance! :)

what you deem to be negativity is simply the good folks on here pointing out to you the fact that you've purchased a vehicle with numerous known faults, which, even in your own words, had you known that before you may well have opted to buy a different one

everyone makes mistakes, if repeating the fact that it looks in good condition is making you feel better about buying a lemon I'm happy for you .....

i still stand by my original post of sell it quick before the HG fails

Lots of us are negative, coz we have had hippoos and been bitten badly. My KV6 came with FSH and an stealer repaired HGF a year prior to my purchase - it still cost me £6500 in a year in repairs and that was with a warranty!
Just be forwarned!
I also had HGF and a month after it was "fixed" it started bubbling again!!!

That is the negativity i am talking about. Say you meet someone with a nasty cough do you immediately run up and tell them "Your lungs are going to fail, you should just keel over and die right now to save prolonging the agony" or do you just say, "thats a nasty cough, hope it doesn't turn out to be serious" and wish them all the best?

Ok, maybe a poor analogy but surely you get my drift?

did you expecting lots of pandering from people on here despite having purchased a vehicle with known faults ?

the truth often hurts, in this case it may well be hurting your wallet

get over it pal

Didn't expect any pandering and appreciate the warnings of the problems i may, or in your opinion will encounter. Just feel you could perhaps work on your interpersonal skills a little :)

Interpersonal skills! This is landyzone! We understand that you are embarassed about your purchase and are now in denial - but "interpersonal skills!" - and yu want our help?

you really are a touchy t wat arent ya

But Sean - he drives a Gaylander ffs - maybe his curling tongs are taking too long to warm up this morning!

or maybe he's woken up to the fact that the reason he got the vehicle cheap was because it's a liability

why do people get so uppy when they get told the truth these days

........ it's bound to be Gordon Browns fault

.

Going from your OP, I'd say you already looked on the negative side.

Forget about HGF, just enjoy the FL, we can all jump off that HGF bridge when we come to it ;)
Tell tale signs are there, just check for them.
