Well I'm thinking of gettin a newer 1 possibly around a 52 plate, don't no what engine as I like the td6 straight engine (newer version of my M51) or the v8 with the power but what's the fuel differances like, I work on um both at work etc but don't really no which is the best, I just fix um when they are busted lol.... What should I look for and what's the fuel economy like, many thanks OH AND BY THE WAY my p38 isn't going anywhere I'm keeping it. :

Go for it, petrol if you can afford to run it. or LPG it ???

diesel is good, only gearboxes are known for breaking !

that didnt put me off the diesel though, im not a petrol head lol

the td6 goes well too once chipped :p

and it will cost more in parts than your p38 will have costed, but your getting a more expensive luxurious car, so the expenses will reflect that.

most of all, have a search on here !! before buying, read the checklist ! lol

good luck mate :)

(ps you wont want to keep you p38 after having an L322) lol

Thanks for that, does the newer range suffer problems with the diesel being chipped like my p38 with gearboxes and potential overheating etc or do they suit being chipped??

and my p38 is something I'm gonna keep after all the blood tears and sweat along with sleepless nights I've suffered and enjoyed lol :D:p

it is not recommended that you chip the L322 engines, especially the Diesel as the gearbox is already underrated in the amount or torque it can take compared to what the engine is allready giving out,

basically you risk cutting the gearbox life even shorter once chipped. but its worth it. mine has been chipped for a year now, smoother gear changes, doesnt hold gears as much etc..

they dont suffer overheating as far as im aware, they just self destruct when they want to

although servicing the box regularly like oil changes frequently can help prolong the life.

as when first shipped out land rover stated the oil never needed changing in the gearboxes (stupid i know)

that statement is now withdrawn by LR lol

i think alot of the boxes that failed wasn't helped by the metal filings build up in the oils.

so i change my oil and filter in the gearbox once a year.

:p

So it's just like the gearbox on my p38 as that's died after chipping the engine (diesel) but still usable just got to select 1st then drive (auto)
I'd love the v8 on gas but they hold there money when LPG already.

Petrol LPG ones are still cheaper to buy than the diesels are

What's your budget ?

Wouldn't be without mine.....

Ruddy fabulous to drive, oodles of power, cheaper to run than the diesel.....

Do a search, I wrote up a long report when I bought mine and also there are a few posts of what to look for.

The parts are more expensive then the p38, but once you drive one you'll realise why.....so much more of a luxurious drive.....

Truly awesome.....

Straight from the horses mouth ! :p

My next Range Rover will be at least a 2006, I never liked the original L322 because of the headlights, they just look gormless. The facelift fixed that problem and now every time I see one I just gush with envy.

The P38 is also the most noisy vehicle I've ever driven and I owned a van before getting it. The wind noise is unbelievable and the engine is so loud I get complaints by the neighbours if I fire it up at night/early morning. Which when you consider it is all stock exhaust is quite alarming.

So yes, if funds allow upgrade, it'd be rude not to.

Savings in fuel are irrelevant as a decent L322 is at least 10 times what you'd get for a P38. You'd never own it long enough to make your money back. Plus running costs (road tax, parts, etc) are higher so you're not going to save money by making the switch. But if you wanted to save money you'd own a 1.0 Corsa.

Per-2004 road tax is cheaper my 4.4 is £270 a year!! Only £55 more than my P38....

Too many late nights Ant, I think you are dreaming, my mates L322's diesels both average around 28/29mpg, I really can't see that 14 mpg on gas comes close even taking into account the higher price of diesel in the UK.
The seats are hard Germanic style and the ride is certainly no better than a P38, they are less prone to tram lining though. Engine slightly less agricultural than the P38.

How do your mates get 29 mpg ? Lol

Mine didn't get 23mpg even without being chipped ?

Plus I think the td6 engine is even louder than the p38 lol

Don't know how they do it, it's from the dash display which neither of them ever re-set so it's a long term average. I guess you drive with the joi de vivre of youth LOL which does nothing for fuel consumption, us poor oldies have to watch the cost:(
The engine is loud, but a bit smoother and of course a bit more powerful.:)

Why would you want a louder vehicle than the P38? If I was a barry and only cared about big blingy 22s, I might like it loud. When you get to my age all I ask for is a quiet relaxing drive.

My DSE was returning 25.6mpg and about 26p per mile...

My L322 on Gas is returning 15mpg and about 22p per mile....

So price per mile compared to my DSE make the L322 cheaper....

If your man is getting 28/29mpg yes it will be a couple of pence per mile cheaper than my L322...

But as a comparison to my DSE, it is running cheaper at the moment.

Some excellant points there people, my budget is only around the 6 or 7 thousand mark so I'm gonna be looking closely at what ever I find but I must admit the early L322 on flea'bay fetch around £6,500 ish. Now I'm not too botherd about repairs as I work for a very distinctive garage repairing bentleys and rolls and have worked on quite a few L322 even rebuilding the 4.4 petrol v8 for a customer so I no my way around them, must admit I couldn't believe how easy it was to do a TDV6 Cambelt, I was surprised to find that there's only around 10 ish BHP differances between the TDV6 and the TD6... But really I'd like the v8 but I got to admit I'm a diesel sort of person at heart.

Ideally I want a vogue but what's the differance between the vogue and the hse apart from the tv screen? Does the hse have heated rear seats and steering wheel? Do they have the auto rain sensors or is that dependant on model year???

My Vogue has Rain Sensing wipers...not sure on the HSE...

HSE dosn't have the Heated Steering wheel I don't think (Hippo will know) and I don't think the seats have 14 way adjustment or however many it is!!

I think the HSE has heated Front seats, but not rear (the Vogue has heated rear seats)

Not sure if the HSE has Tri-Zone Climate control - the Vogue has a seperate motor and temp control in the rear of the centre console for the rear seats...

Oh FFS. You'd think that designers could come up with something better than that if they'd run out of useful ideas.

G~

regarding the HSE spec, some are different. all depends on what the original buyer specified at the time of purchase.

some are pretty damm basic (crap) and then you can be lucky (like me)

my HSE model has eveything that the vogue has except for the Nav screen and the different shaped seats / headrests that the vogue seems to have.

it has everything else that i can think of that a vogue would have, including the heated seats front and back, heated steering wheel, separate heating controls for rear passengers as "Saint V8" describes above.

but i was lucky, like i say.. some can be pretty basic. but if your lucky you can find a fully loaded HSE vogue spec for the price tag of a HSE which can be a lot lower than the vogue.

or in my case a good 2K lower lol

but my friend also has a HSE but it seems to be totally vogue spec including the sat nav screen ?

i think i heard somewhere that at some point LR sales of vogues had a long waiting list time and the people who didn't want to wait just got the HSE and added all the extras :) i think so anyway lol
