Help new member range rover sport parking brake fault

Hi all new member in need of some advice
Picked up my 2006 range rover sport 2.7td hse 3 days ago
Now car ran fine until today when I pulled up to my house. Put the car in park
As I put on the epb a Loud screech started and the red p symbol on dash started flashing along with a yellow one
The brake has freed up but can't use as every time I Press it the above happens
Also now have the red airbag light on the dash


Any poss ideas what it could be and costs involved

Aaaah. The Squeal of death. It sounds like the brakes need cleaning and adjusting.

If your vehicle is an auto I would suggest pulling out the handbrake fuse until you get it to the garage. If the brakes do come on they will often lock up and won't come off even with the cable override.

Yes mate its an auto
Have heard about modules going could this be the cause
It seems to come on but the screening sound
Tbh soon as I hear it I put it straight off again to save the yellow light flashing and maybe it locking on again
What could be causing the airbag light to come on

If the adjusting of the handbrake shles doesnt work then a new module with cables will be required and it is not a diy job a ramp is needed and body opened like a sandwich to get module out

I can't tell you that. It'd need plugging into a diagnostic computer.

Did you buy it privately or from a garage?

Private sale mate been on the phone to the guy and am getting the it was fine when you left
No excuse only had it 3 days and now this happening


He's asked me to get it looked at first and wee will take it from there
Seems he has already spent the money I payed him on another car but tbh looks like we could come to blows over this

Unfortunately for you it was a private sale sold as seen sorry to be the bearer of bad news. (Ive had it done to me before) you could of requested a rac/aa check with the seller etc.

With the problem you are getting the squealing noise is the actuator in the module trying to operate the shoes now it could be a few things and ive seen them all.

Mis adjusted shoe's (there is a set procedure for this on how to adjust correctly)

Partially or seized cables

Partially or seized handbrake lever on the shoes

Shoes with no linings

Module failures

If you can diy I would strip out the drums and inspect and make sure shoes cables and levers are in good order and not seized. Then adjust as see what happens kf it still occurs new module needed. I can also send you how to adjust shoes and how to put shoes into epb mot testing which means shoes can be operated upto 30mph

In Private sale you could be on a sticky wicket.....fighting will not solve the issue and a bumfight will be the last thing you want...it will be a typical case of one word over the other.

There used to be a phrase in Law called Caveat Emptor - Let the Buyer Beware - this has sinced passed, but in a private sale the onous is on the Buyer to ensure the goods are merchantable unless the seller has deliberately misled the buyer - trouble is, proving this misleading information is extremely difficult to prove....unless it is bleeding obvious i.e. you purchase a red jumper from ebay as per the description and a blue one turns up...that is obviously not as described and you have been misled.

Sold as Seen with no warranty or guarantee implied or offered is the usual terminology for a private sale...

Search out post from a member called Fanatic - he is very knowledgable on Sale of Goods and etc.

What is the worst case ruff cost am looking at as he has said look at covering part the cost
Al be wanting half at very least
The car was in the dealer a month or so back down to a power drain
The dealer traced it back to the tailgate switch

Yep there's that but rather try resolve issue easy way first
Already had the heated phone call in which he hang up
After a while called again this time keeping it calm
He states he didn't know any issue was there and asked me to get it checked and call him back with the verdict

Then Maybe thats whats best to do!

Might not be as bad as your expecting plus once you know how much its gona cost maybe he'll put towards the repairs

i've only been working on modern discos/RRs with that crappy EPB for about 6-8 weeks, the amount of times i've heard the "screech of death" is ridiculous

the main box and cables are an absolute nightmare to replace should you need to

the drums (inside the discs) are generally rusty along with buildup on the shoes

actual adjusting the shoes isn't too bad but will do you no good whatsoever if the emergency release has been pulled as it unhooks a cable inside the actuator

i've stripped a couple of them out and sorted them but i really wouldn't want to do the job laying on my back in the street

the EPB must be one of the crappiest ideas that landrover has adopted

p.s.
there's no saying that the seller knew it was about to go, the damn things fail randomly

EPB, another stupid over complication. No good getting heavy with the seller, he's under no obligation unless he took steps to disguise a pre-existing problem and thereby made a fraudulant transaction. You bought it, no professional condition check, your problem.

Read enough and had a p38=never again until land rover sort their electronic out.

Compared to some of the other LR models, the P38 is not that bad if it's looked after
LR seem obsessed with unecessary electronic gizmo's
