Righ having problems with my 3.5 ERFI that ive just put in my landy. ive got it all wires sorted (so i think) when i try and start the engine after a few turn overs it starts and idles fastly for around 3-4 seconds then stops. so far ive tryed re sealing the plenum chamber, blocking off all the pipes to the plenum chamber but i keeps doing the same. ive got a ew 3 Bar fuel pump fitted.

i think that its starting by just using the fuel the cold start injeter as when i un-plug it it wont start at all.

ive been at this for a good 2 weeks now tring everything i can think of and find out, and if im onist im getting a lill ****ed off with it.

so can anyone help??

Sounds like you're running out of petrol pressure? Check that the pump is actually running when the engine is on, sounds more like the pump shuts off when the engine is going....

Hot wire or flapper system? What tests/checks have you made to ensure all the relays are energising properly? Have you checked/tested continuity on all the leads etc?

It sounds like it will be something daft as the engine will fire and sort of run so it isn't a mechanical problem (hopefully).

its the flapper EFI i have followed the land rover EFI manual that i have been lent and tested all relays etc and everything is ok. ive ran out of experiance now. there is loads of fuel preasure there the pump pumping out 43 psi and the book says there should be a min of 35 psi. anyone local that can giz a hand lol. im at harrogate

O.K. a bit of a long shot here. I note you've posted that the alternator is not lined up properly. I wonder if you're losing your EFI trigger signal?? The alternator although not directly part of the EFI loom/circuit could be a factor, I have had injection misfire due to faulty alternator on my 3.9 Hot Wire RRC.

Do a search, Ramon Alban has done a bit on the 3.5 flapper system, hopefully that will help you trouble shoot this one, I'm afraid it will mean a bit of searching but you'll be amazed how much you will learn on the way. I guess the basics should be test voltage, earthing, ignition amplifier, coil etc.

Hi there the problem is not with the fuel pump or alternator as i had the same problem before starting up on the cold start then cutting out after 3 seconds ( injectors not powering up) it is the efi wiring. on the range rover there is a fuel cut off switch that cuts the fuel off in a crash, you have to bypass this by changing 1 wire round on the fuel injection loom. the range rover manual DOES not show this! ring Mark Adams V8 efi specialist on 01694 720144 between 9am-11am and he will talk you through this in about 2 min. ( this bloke is the best and knows all the efi loom and wires from memory!!)

i would fit a inertia switch as in the event of a accident if the igntion is still on with the enine off the pump will still be pump thus a major fire risk!
on the injection pump relay is it staying live once the engine has run it could be a poor relay earth or ecu switching wrongly or i can suggest is start with each wire and test it so that it is connected where it should be

Ive sorted it thanks to Simon from Harrogate Independent Land Rover Specialist who has took out some of his own time to come and have a look at it tonight. he has a V8 90 racer and runs a Flapper EFI on that, so he knows what he is doing.
He tested every thing and the ECU was not getting a signal from the Coil due to the small in lile resistor. so he took that out and it ran a dream. he s also taken off the over run relay and the 9th injector as it's only needed when its - 19 out side and they can sometimes leak into the plenum chamber.
So a Big thanks to him for doing that so far he has never let me down and if your from Harrogate area and need parts at a very good price then he is ya man !!
