The latest in a depressingly long list of issues with my '97 300tdi Auto is that the engine has started to die when I come to a junction or similar. The engine is just cutting out as the car slows to a halt. It won't restart for a couple of minutes, but does start and carries on after resting for a few minutes and then drives fine until I next have to slow right down or stop. Doesn't happen every time I stop or slow right down but does seem to definitely follow the pattern of taking place only when I slow down to stop and I then have to sit at the side of the road for a few minutes, and then off we go again.

It's recently had a new fuel pump, lift pump, diesel tank and various connecting pipes so my guess is it's related in some way to this? If anyone recognises the problem and the solution I'd love to hear it because the car is driving me mad right now!

i would undo front banjo bolt on the injection pump and work lift pump either with lever or starter,it should pump copious amounts of fuel with no air bubbles with each stroke of pump, fuel is sucked from tank to lift pump so air can enter easily if theres a poor fitting etc, lhs pipe on sender unit is the feed for lift pump or should be

Bet if you put a 12v supply via a switch direct to the battery to the fuel solenoid it won't happen anymore, my mate had the same problem years back. You need the switch though otherwise the engine won't turn off when you kill the ignition

got that on mine through a relay to switch, worked fine for a year or more
