Hi guys and gals, im new to the forum go easy on me please:D

Recently purchased my first defender 90. Its a td5 with 80000 on the clock. Looks like an honest example an excellent condition inside and out. I got her from a dealer and am really pleased with here. pictures added below in my post below. However...

My wife was driving the 90 today whilst I was following behind in my work van when I noticed som light black smoke on her acceleration/gear changes.

Iv checked the oil and its clean and at a good level. Im no mechanic and I am new to Defenders so I was wondering, is this normal?

Also I noticed a small leak that seems to be coming from the gearbox. Shes going back to the dealer on Monday to get looked at but im a bit of a big girl with my landy so was wondering if I get get any info, or find out if these are fairly common/normal problems?

Thanks for your opinions in advance.

A bit more info on the leak also. It upon further inspection that the leak is actualy coming from behind the engine above the gearbox. Can anyone suggest what this might me? Anybody had a similar problem?

Many thanks for your replies guys. Wouldnt the diesel regulator smell like diesel? Because it just smells like oil.

Again thanks

Pic 1/. Nice baby
Pic 2/. They are all like that
pic 3/. If it ain't connected to anything and everything still works, consider it as a random spare bit!

turbos do puff black smoke on acceleration ,oil leak on gear box is often fuel pressure regulator on drivers side rear of head ,it leaks back running own over gear box worth checking

Yes, mine has the oil leak. Probably not too severe in my case as it doesn't leave drips where it is parked, but explains why the rear of that side of the engine, the various wiring looms and the starter are kept moist. It didn't seem very diesel-like to me, as a good deal of it was black and sticky. But evaporation and road dirt would account for that over time I suppose.

How bad does it have to be before it's worth dismantling?

It's probably some sort of dash warning light that got unplugged before you bought the car ^^

You are probably right! I had been looking so long for a decent defender that this one got me so excited I forgot to do half my checks. Upon inspection at home she has a great chassis and baulkhead and her condition is honest for a 2003. I am happy for now, however....

She is going back to dealer on monday to get the diesel regulator sorted as it seems that is the leaky leaky problem.

with regards to the connector, it seems it is just a part of the wiring. Il have to investigate what its for as I am a sparky by trade and a wire hanging loose doing nothing is unexceptable to me. With that thing hanging there and me not knowing what the f~@£ it does makes me feel like I have lost

Thanks for all your input guys. This place is great and you are a very kind bunch for being so informative to a useless newbie like me. :D
