I will tell you what happened first so you can get an idea.

Firstly i put a snorkel on my 1999 defender 90 300 yesterday and I did not put silicone on any parts of the inside piping apart from the first entry in the wing  I didn't realise, I know its my fault, I just want to sort the problems now.

I drove into deep water and got stuck, the LR was running for about 10 mins, then when I tried to reverse as being pulled it lost power and cut out. It was then stuck for a further 20-30 mins not running. I was being winched out of the 'Hell hole' at Parkwood 4x4 - this didnt work so we disconnected the air filter, it started and I reversed out, there was a hissing noise coming from the underneath and the power was down. We then took the air filter out and I drove a further 200 yards it then completely lost power and cut out.

It was towed up the top we disconected the intercooler pipe and put jump leads on it started, and smoke was coming out from all over the exhaust, we then found a hole had blew through the exhuast. We then loosened the glow plugs and turned it over a few times, water came out but not loads. The ignition turns and lights come on, but it does that slow turnover sound and doesnt want to start.

I know you would need to see the land rover to be able to tell, but any advice would be good  Thanks

with your snorkel connected properly water aint a problem,we regulary do this bomb hole with varying success and a very wet ass

firstl you made several mistakes,
Out of interest winching didnt work you say? Did the guy know what he was doing or have any clue? Snatch blocks ground anchor etc?

As you incorrectly fitted the snorkel is it worth asking if you fitted wading bungs before you went in?

Anyway your clutch may have been saturated with water giving a power loss feeling although from what you have said sounds as if you have done much more
Damage than just a down pipe bent con rod i don't know but I wouldnt want it happenin to my mota.
In that case turn off winch out release compression, turn over by hand then when satisfied by starter motor, then when happy there is no water anywhere filter intercooler etc and the oil looks good, then try and start that way minimizing the damage done.

Head gasket?
Valves?
Push rods?
Con rods?
Pistons?
If you are lucky then you may have got away with alot of stuff it depends.
How lucky do you feel?
